Chapter 4 - The Signature

The signature appeared on a document dated eighteen months earlier.
Claire recognized it immediately.
It was hers.
But she had never signed the page.
Daniel placed the document on the table.
“This is a problem.”
Claire stared at the signature.
“How bad?”
“If this is accepted as legitimate, Evan can argue that you authorized the transfer.”
Claire touched the page.
“It isn't my signature.”
“I know.”
“Then who forged it?”
Daniel looked at her.
“We may already know.”
He opened another file.
A former company administrator.
Emily Harper.
Emily had disappeared from Mercer House six months earlier.
Evan had told Claire she had been fired for stealing.
Daniel had found something else.
Emily had emailed herself copies of several documents before leaving.
And one of those documents showed Vanessa standing inside Evan’s private office late at night.
Claire studied the photograph.
“What was she doing?”
“Accessing company files.”
Claire leaned back.
“Then find Emily.”
“I’m trying.”
“Try harder.”
Daniel gave her a rare smile.
“You’re starting to sound like a lawyer.”
Claire closed the file.
“No.”

She looked at the photograph again.
“I’m starting to sound like someone who finally knows what she has.”
