Chapter 7 - The Account He Couldn’t Touch

The next morning, Evan stormed into Claire’s study.
“You froze the company account.”
Claire continued reading.
“I did?”
“Don't play games.”
“I’m not.”
He threw a folder onto her desk.
“You're not authorized.”
Claire looked at the folder.
Then at him.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Then you should speak to your attorney.”
“I already did.”
“And?”
“He says the bank requires your signature.”
Claire nodded.
“Then perhaps you should ask yourself why.”
Evan stared at her.
“You've been hiding things.”
Claire closed the book.
“No.”
“I know you have.”
“You've been hiding things too.”
He stepped closer.
“What do you think you know?”
Claire looked at him.
“Enough.”
He laughed.
“You think you can destroy me?”
Claire's expression remained calm.
“No.”
She stood.
“I think you’re destroying yourself.”
Evan grabbed the folder and left.
Claire waited until the door closed.
Then she opened her desk drawer.
Inside was another document.
At the bottom was a signature.
Not hers.
Evan’s.
Beside it was a transfer authorization he had signed months ago.
Claire had not been the one who froze the account.

She had simply discovered who had the authority to do it.
And someone else had already acted.
