Chapter 8 - The Envelope
Richard immediately ordered a complete lockdown.
Steel security barriers rose around the estate.
Every communication line was encrypted.
Every employee underwent emergency screening.
Still...
No one knew how Trevor had penetrated the system.
The following morning an armored courier arrived carrying a small package addressed personally to Rebecca.
No return address.
No fingerprints.
Richard wanted it destroyed.
Rebecca stopped him.
"It could be important."
Inside the package was the missing stuffed rabbit.
Emma smiled happily and hugged it immediately.
Rebecca froze.
Hidden inside the rabbit was the folded note Samuel had given her.
Except...
There was something else.
A tiny brass key.
And another message.
Locker 214.
Union Central Station.
Open before Trevor does.
Richard immediately assembled a security team.
Within thirty minutes they arrived at the station.
Locker 214 stood untouched.
Richard unlocked it using the brass key.
Inside rested only one object.
A sealed envelope.
On the front were six handwritten words.
For Rebecca.
When You Finally Trust Yourself.
Rebecca slowly opened it.
Inside was a flash drive...
...and an ultrasound photo.
Not Emma's.
A different baby.
Written beneath the image was a date.
It was taken six months before Rebecca had even met Trevor.
Richard frowned.
"Whose child is this?"
Rebecca noticed something written on the back.
Don't believe what Trevor told you about your first pregnancy.
Her hands began shaking violently.
She looked at Richard.
"I was never pregnant before Emma."
Richard's expression changed.
"Then someone wants you to remember something you don't."
Neither of them noticed a man watching from the crowded station café.
He quietly stood up.
Adjusted his baseball cap.
And made a brief phone call.
"They found the envelope."
A familiar voice answered calmly.
"Good."
"What now?"
