Chapter 15 - The Voice on the Recording

Rebecca spent the entire night reading.
Every answer created two new questions.
Her mother's journal described secret meetings, hidden identities, and repeated warnings never to trust appearances.
Near the final pages was a small digital recorder taped into the binding.
Richard pressed Play.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman's voice spoke.
Rebecca's mother's voice.
"If you're hearing this, I've failed."
"I couldn't protect you."
"But remember one thing."
"Trevor was never the first man sent into your life."
Rebecca looked at Richard in confusion.
"What does that mean?"
The recording continued.
"The man you should fear..."
"...is the one who has stood beside our family the longest."
Richard slowly lowered the recorder.
Neither of them spoke.
At that exact moment, a housekeeper rushed into the library.
"Mr. Lawson!"
Richard turned.
"What happened?"
"The nursery..."
Rebecca ran.
Emma's crib was empty.
The bedroom window stood open.
Resting on the blanket was a single black envelope.
Rebecca tore it open with shaking hands.
Inside was a simple handwritten message.
You were searching for the truth.
Now come and find your daughter.
Beneath the note was a photograph taken only minutes earlier.
Emma was alive.
She was sitting safely in someone's arms.
But the person's face had been deliberately torn from the picture.
Rebecca looked up, tears filling her eyes.
"I don't care who they are anymore."
"I'm bringing my daughter home."
The lights throughout the Lawson Estate suddenly went dark.
Somewhere in the darkness...
A slow, deliberate round of applause echoed through the mansion.
Then an unfamiliar voice whispered,
May you like
"Welcome to the real beginning."
End of Part One.
