Chapter 5 - The Warehouse

Rebecca couldn't stop thinking about the note.

He's watching more than you know.

The words echoed in her mind every time Trevor looked at her with that calm, unreadable smile.

For three days she searched the house for Emma's missing stuffed rabbit.

It was nowhere.

Trevor watched her from the kitchen.

"Looking for something?"

Rebecca forced a smile.

"Emma misplaced her toy."

Trevor knelt beside Emma, gently brushing her blonde curls away from her face.

"What toy?"

"The rabbit."

Trevor shrugged.

"Children lose things."

His voice was warm.

His eyes were not.

That Friday morning Trevor announced he had a business meeting that would last until evening.

Rebecca waited exactly twenty minutes after his car disappeared through the security gates.

Then she picked up Emma and drove toward the abandoned warehouse.

The building stood alone beside an old freight yard, surrounded by rusting train tracks and broken windows.

Rebecca hesitated before stepping inside.

Dust floated through the cold air.

The silence was overwhelming.

Then she heard footsteps.

An elderly woman emerged from the shadows.

"I've been waiting for you."

Rebecca instinctively held Emma closer.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Margaret."

"Do I know you?"

"No."

"But I knew your mother."

Rebecca froze.

"My mother died when I was twelve."

Margaret nodded slowly.

"That's what everyone was told."

Rebecca's heartbeat quickened.

"What do you mean?"

Margaret reached into an old metal cabinet and removed a faded photograph.

It showed a much younger Rebecca.

Her mother.

Richard Lawson.

And another man Rebecca had never seen before.

The stranger's arm rested protectively on her mother's shoulder.

"Who is he?"

Margaret looked directly into Rebecca's eyes.

"The man your father spent thirty years trying to erase."

Before Rebecca could ask another question...

A loud engine roared outside.

Several black SUVs surrounded the warehouse.

Margaret's face turned pale.

"They found us."

"Who?"

May you like

Margaret whispered only one word.

"Trevor."
