Chapter 9 - The Summer in Chicago
The art program originally seemed impossible after the investigation began.
Then Ms. Patel contacted the program director. Aunt Rachel completed the paperwork. A community foundation covered the remaining travel expenses.
On the first day in Chicago, Emily stood inside a museum beneath a ceiling larger than her entire house. Students around her argued cheerfully about paintings and colors. Nobody told her to keep quiet for the sake of peace.
Her first major project was a series of ten doorways.
The first door had no handle.
The second was covered in shadows.
By the tenth, the door stood open toward a sunrise.
Her instructor asked what the series meant.
Emily considered giving a simple answer. Instead, she said, “It’s about how escape starts before you physically leave. Sometimes it starts when one person believes you.”
She stayed in contact with Angela and attended counseling by video. Healing was not quick or perfect. Sudden voices still made her tense. Family photographs still caused confusion. She missed her mother while remaining angry with her.
One evening, she chose to read Laura’s letter.
Laura did not ask for forgiveness. She admitted that she had seen enough to know Emily needed protection and had chosen denial because she feared Daniel.
“I called my silence love,” Laura wrote. “It was cowardice.”
Emily folded the letter.
