Chapter 8 - The Hearing
Two months later, Emily entered family court wearing a navy dress and carrying the black notebook in a clear evidence bag.
A victim advocate sat beside her. Aunt Rachel waited nearby. Across the room, Daniel stood with his attorney. Laura sat alone behind him. Brittany attended remotely under the terms of her case.
Daniel’s attorney argued that the Carter home had been strict but not unsafe. He described Emily as gifted, anxious, and easily influenced by teachers.
Then Dr. Grant testified.
She explained that the medical findings were inconsistent with a single accident and that Emily’s behavior showed clear fear of answering independently. She did not dramatize. She simply presented the facts.
Ms. Patel testified next.
“She never asked me to rescue her,” the teacher said. “She asked whether telling the truth would make everything worse.”
Finally, Emily was offered the chance to speak.
She did not describe every incident. She did not need to.
“My father always said family problems should stay inside the family,” she told the judge. “But that rule only protected the people who had power. It never protected me.”
Daniel looked at her with the expression that once made her forget her own thoughts.
This time, she kept speaking.
“I want to attend school. I want to make art. I want to sleep without listening for footsteps outside my door. I don’t want revenge. I want the truth to matter.”
The judge granted Aunt Rachel temporary guardianship, extended the protective order, and required that any future contact with Laura occur only with Emily’s consent and professional supervision.
Daniel was ordered to stay away.
