Chapter 5 - The First Honest Conversation
After Emily said, “It wasn’t the first time,” Angela Moore did not ask for every painful detail.
She asked simple questions.
“Are you afraid to go home?”
“Yes.”
“Has someone told you that this is your fault?”
“Yes.”
“Is there an adult you trust?”
Emily thought of Ms. Patel.
Angela wrote down the name.
Outside the curtain, Daniel’s voice grew louder. He insisted that Brittany had made one mistake and that strangers were tearing apart a good family. Detective Nolan warned him that interference would make the situation worse.
Laura asked to see Emily.
Angela gave Emily the choice.
“No,” Emily whispered.
It was the first time she had refused her mother without apologizing.
A nurse brought water. Dr. Grant returned and explained that Emily would remain in the hospital while a safety plan was arranged. She spoke directly to Emily, not over her.
“You did nothing wrong by telling the truth,” she said.
Emily began to cry again, but this time the tears felt different. They were not the helpless tears she had swallowed at home. They came with relief.
Detective Nolan collected statements from the family. Brittany changed her story twice. Daniel blamed the hospital, the school, and Emily’s imagination. Laura admitted she had seen injuries but claimed she believed the explanations.
Then Angela received a call from Ms. Patel.
The teacher said Emily had been documenting incidents in a black notebook.
