Chapter 7 - Brittany’s Story Falls Apart

Brittany believed Daniel could fix everything.
He hired an attorney and told her to remain calm. He said the hospital had overreacted and Emily would eventually come home.
But investigators continued gathering evidence.
The school nurse provided records of Emily’s repeated visits. Ms. Patel shared emails in which Emily had asked whether a student could attend the Chicago program without parental approval. A neighbor recalled hearing arguments and once seeing Emily outside late at night after being locked out during a family dispute.
Brittany’s messages became especially important.
Some apologized. Others blamed Emily. Several warned her not to tell anyone because their father would make sure nobody believed her.
When confronted, Brittany stopped defending Daniel.
She admitted that her anger had become worse after leaving college. She admitted that Daniel encouraged her resentment by saying Emily was selfish and disloyal. She admitted that Laura often cleaned up the aftermath while pretending nothing serious had happened.
“I didn’t think it would go this far,” Brittany said.
Detective Nolan answered, “It went this far because everyone kept deciding the next incident would be the last.”
Brittany accepted responsibility for her actions and agreed to a court-ordered treatment program. She was prohibited from contacting Emily.
Daniel refused every offer to cooperate. He called Emily ungrateful and accused Laura of betrayal when she decided to give a full statement.
That decision ended their marriage.

Laura moved into a small apartment and began counseling. She wrote Emily a letter, but Angela did not deliver it immediately.
“An apology does not create access,” Angela explained. “Emily chooses when she is ready.”
