Chapter 1 - The Perfect Family Photograph
Three weeks earlier, the Carter family stood beneath a flowering arch in their backyard while a photographer counted down.
Daniel placed one hand on Laura’s shoulder. Brittany leaned toward her mother with a bright smile. Emily stood at the edge of the group, wearing a long-sleeved dress despite the warm afternoon.
“Closer,” Daniel said without moving his smile. “People will think we don’t like each other.”
Emily stepped closer.
The camera flashed.
To their neighbors, the Carters looked successful and devoted. Daniel owned a respected construction company. Laura volunteered at church events. Brittany, twenty, had recently returned home after leaving college and often posted affectionate family pictures online.
Emily was the quiet one. Teachers called her polite. Relatives called her sensitive. Daniel called her difficult whenever she disagreed with Brittany.
The tension had begun years earlier, but it grew worse after Brittany came home. Brittany resented Emily’s good grades, her place on the school art team, and the way their grandmother had left Emily a small education fund.
Whenever Brittany lost her temper, Daniel found a reason to blame Emily.
“You know how anxious your sister is,” he would say.
Laura always followed with the same request.
“Please, Emily. Keep the peace.”
So Emily learned to apologize before she understood what she had supposedly done. She learned to hide damaged schoolwork, broken belongings, and the fear that tightened her chest whenever she heard Brittany approaching her room.
The family photograph was printed and placed above the fireplace.
In it, Emily looked calm.
