Chapter 4 - Dr. Grant Sees the Pattern
At the emergency room, Daniel answered every question for Emily.
“She fell near the dining table.”
“She’s always been clumsy.”
“She gets emotional and exaggerates pain.”
Dr. Marisol Grant listened while examining Emily. She noticed how the girl looked toward her father before answering. She noticed older marks that did not match the evening’s explanation. She noticed Laura twisting her wedding ring and Brittany refusing to look at the bed.
When the nurse asked the family to step outside for imaging, Daniel objected.
“She’s a minor. I’m staying.”
Dr. Grant’s voice remained professional.
“The technician needs space.”
Once the door closed, Dr. Grant asked, “Do you feel safe at home?”
Emily stared at the X-ray machine.
“Yes.”
The answer came too quickly.
Dr. Grant did not challenge it.
“Has anyone told you what to say tonight?”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears, but she said nothing.
That silence was enough to make the doctor slow down.
She reviewed Emily’s medical history. There had been two urgent-care visits during the previous year, a school nurse report about a wrist injury, and repeated explanations involving falls, doors, and sports Emily did not play.
When the images appeared, Dr. Grant called a radiologist. Then she contacted the hospital’s child-protection team.
By the time Daniel demanded to know why the visit was taking so long, the call to CPS had already been made.
