Chapter 3 - The Dinner That Changed Everything
The argument that sent Emily to the hospital began with an acceptance letter.
Emily had been selected for a summer art program in Chicago. The envelope arrived on a Friday, and for one hour she allowed herself to imagine a different life: dorm rooms, museum visits, late-night sketching, and adults who listened when she spoke.
At dinner, she placed the letter beside Daniel’s plate.
“I got a scholarship,” she said. “The program covers almost everything.”
Laura looked surprised.
“Chicago?”
“For six weeks.”
Brittany laughed without humor.
“Of course she gets to leave.”
Daniel read the letter slowly.
“You applied without asking me?”
“The deadline was months ago.”
“You knew I would say no.”
Emily’s hope disappeared.
Brittany pushed back her chair.
“She thinks she’s better than us.”
“I never said that.”
“You don’t have to.”
The argument rose quickly. Daniel accused Emily of secrecy. Brittany accused her of showing off. Laura asked everyone to calm down while looking only at Emily.
Then Brittany noticed the education-fund paperwork attached to the letter.
“So Grandma’s money pays for this?”
“It’s for school.”
Brittany reached for the papers. Emily pulled them back.
A glass fell from the table and shattered.
What happened next lasted only seconds, but the family’s version formed immediately afterward.
Brittany claimed Emily had started the struggle. Daniel ordered Emily to stop crying. Laura picked up the broken glass and repeated that accidents happened.
Emily sat on the kitchen floor, holding her arm close to her body.
