Chapter 6 - The Notebook Is Found
Detective Nolan obtained permission to retrieve Emily’s school materials and personal belongings.
Daniel insisted there was no notebook.
Brittany said Emily invented stories for attention.
Laura said she had never seen it.
But when officers searched Emily’s room, they found the black notebook beneath the mattress exactly where she said it would be.
Inside were dated entries, sketches, photographs printed from a school computer, and copies of messages Brittany had sent after arguments. One page described Daniel taking Emily’s phone and threatening to cancel the Chicago program if she spoke to a counselor.
Another page listed people who had noticed something was wrong: Ms. Patel, the school nurse, a neighbor, and Emily’s grandmother before she died.
The notebook did not contain revenge or exaggeration. Its calmness made it more powerful.
Detective Nolan also found a small envelope taped beneath the bed frame. Inside was a spare memory card from an old camera Emily used for art projects.
The card contained an audio recording made accidentally during a family argument. No harmful act was captured, but Daniel’s voice could be heard ordering Emily to repeat a false explanation before a previous clinic visit.
When Laura heard the recording at the station, she began to shake.
“I thought I was protecting the family,” she said.
Detective Nolan replied, “You were protecting the people causing the fear.”
Laura lowered her head.
Meanwhile, Angela arranged for Emily to stay temporarily with her aunt Rachel, Laura’s younger sister, who lived in a nearby town and had not been allowed close contact with the family for years.

Now Rachel was the first adult to say, “You never have to earn safety in my home.”
