THE CHILDREN WITH HIS EYES / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - the custody order

The emergency custody petition claimed Maya had concealed the children from their biological family and intended to flee the country.

It described her as financially unstable, emotionally unpredictable, and connected to criminal activity through her brother.

Every accusation was supported by evidence Conrad had fabricated five years earlier.

Adrian tore the folder from the attorney’s hands.

“You filed for custody of children you never told me existed?”

Conrad looked at the photographers gathering near the path.

“This is not the place.”

“You made it the place when you arrived with a court order.”

Maya held the DNA report against her chest.

The children stood behind her, frightened by the number of strangers.

Adrian saw their faces and controlled his anger.

He crouched several feet away so he would not appear threatening.

“My name is Adrian.”

“We know,” Lila said.

Noah touched her shoulder, warning her not to say more.

Adrian’s eyes filled with emotion.

“I’m not going to let anyone take you away from your mother.”

Conrad laughed softly.

“You have no authority to make that promise.”

Adrian rose.

“I’m their father.”

“You are an alleged father until the court accepts the test.”

Elias stepped forward.

“The test was performed by two accredited laboratories. Both results match.”

Conrad’s attorney whispered into his ear.

For the first time, Conrad’s confidence weakened.

Maya opened the report again.

The additional genetic match remained at the bottom of the second page, but she had no time to examine it.

Police officers approached the path.

Conrad had arranged for immediate enforcement.

Maya pulled the children close.

Adrian stood between them and the officers.

“My attorneys will challenge the order.”

One officer looked uncomfortable.

“Sir, we have instructions to transport the children to a temporary family residence pending a hearing.”

“They stay with their mother.”

“We have a signed order.”

Maya’s fear sharpened into clarity.

She handed the DNA report to Elias and opened the file she had carried in the stroller compartment.

Inside were copies of Conrad’s forged declaration, the voice synthesis invoice, the hidden listening device, Jamie’s false confession, and records of the redirected calls.

She held up the listening device.

“This man tracked me inside a hospital after threatening my unborn children. He falsified financial evidence and communications to isolate me from their father.”

Conrad’s attorney stepped forward.

“Those allegations are unverified.”

Elias raised his phone.

“They won’t remain unverified. I sent complete copies to the district attorney ten minutes ago.”

Conrad turned toward him.

“You worked for my family.”

“I worked for Adrian. You were never the same thing.”

The police officers exchanged a glance.

One called a supervisor.

The custody transfer was delayed until the evidence could be reviewed.

Conrad moved close to Maya.

“You think a collection of old papers will protect you?”

Adrian pushed him back without striking him.

“Do not go near her.”

Conrad studied his son.

“You are throwing away your future for a woman who vanished.”

“She vanished because you trapped her.”

“She chose to believe the worst of you.”

Adrian looked at Maya.

The accusation landed because it carried part of the truth.

Maya had believed the fake message.

Adrian had believed the fake evidence.

Conrad had succeeded because both of them had allowed fear to speak louder than trust.

The children were taken to Jamie’s home under police protection while the custody order was reviewed.

Adrian watched the car disappear.

Then he turned toward Celeste.

“You knew she was pregnant.”

Celeste’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

May you like

“How long?”

“From the beginning.”
