THE CHILDREN WITH HIS EYES / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - three heartbeats

Five years earlier, Maya sat alone in a private clinic with one hand pressed against her mouth.

The examination room was quiet except for the rhythmic sound coming from the monitor.

One heartbeat.

Then another.

Then a third.

The doctor smiled gently.

“Triplets.”

Maya stared at the blurred shapes on the screen.

She had spent the previous week expecting bad news. The dizziness, the exhaustion, and the sudden nausea had frightened her. She had told herself it was stress caused by Adrian’s constant travel and the pressure surrounding the Vale family.

She had not expected three lives.

“Are you certain?” she asked.

The doctor pointed at the screen.

“Three separate heartbeats. It is early, but they are strong.”

Maya laughed once, then began to cry.

Adrian was in Singapore negotiating the largest acquisition in Vale Industries’ history. His phone had been unreachable for nearly two days, but she imagined the way his serious expression would break when she told him.

He had once admitted that he wanted children but feared becoming like his father.

Maya had taken his hand and promised that fear did not determine what kind of man he would become.

Now she placed both hands over her stomach.

“You’re going to have a good father,” she whispered.

She left the clinic carrying three ultrasound photographs in a white envelope.

Outside, rain had begun to fall.

Maya tried Adrian again.

The call went directly to voicemail.

“Adrian, it’s me. I have something important to tell you. Something wonderful. Call me the moment you hear this.”

She sent a photograph of the ultrasound.

The message appeared to deliver.

What Maya did not know was that Adrian’s phone had been cloned by his father’s security team.

Every call from her number was redirected.

Every message was copied.

On the forty-second floor of Vale Tower, Conrad Vale received the ultrasound photograph before his son ever had a chance to see it.

He studied the image without emotion.

Then he called his chief of security.

“Bring Maya Bennett to the estate tomorrow morning.”

The man on the other end hesitated.

“Does Mr. Adrian know?”

“He will know what I decide he needs to know.”

Maya returned to the apartment she shared with Adrian and placed the ultrasound pictures on the kitchen table.

She spent the evening writing possible names in a notebook.

Noah, because Adrian had once said the name sounded strong.

Finn, because it had belonged to Maya’s grandfather.

Lila, because it reminded her of spring.

At midnight, someone knocked on the apartment door.

A chauffeur in a dark uniform stood outside.

“Mr. Conrad Vale requests your presence at the family estate tomorrow.”

“Is Adrian back?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Then tell Conrad I’ll speak to him after Adrian returns.”

The chauffeur handed her a cream-colored envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Maya leaving the clinic.

Another photograph showed her entering Adrian’s apartment.

A final image showed the white medical envelope in her hand.

At the bottom was a handwritten sentence.

We need to discuss the future of those children.

Maya slept very little that night.

The following morning, she hid the ultrasound pictures inside her coat and went to the Vale estate.

Conrad waited in the library beside a fire that was too large for the mild weather.

He did not offer her a seat.

“You are carrying my son’s children.”

“I’m carrying Adrian’s children.”

“That distinction depends on whether you remain part of his life.”

Maya held his gaze.

“Adrian loves me.”

Conrad smiled faintly.

“My son loves many things until they become inconvenient.”

He placed a document on the desk.

It was a transfer agreement for two million dollars.

Maya did not touch it.

“What is this?”

“Enough money for you and the children to disappear comfortably.”

She tore the document in half.

Conrad watched the pieces fall.

Then he opened a second folder.

This one contained police records, financial statements, and photographs of Maya’s younger brother, Jamie.

Jamie had struggled with debt after their mother’s death. Maya had helped him whenever she could.

Conrad tapped one photograph.

“Your brother borrowed money from people who are not patient.”

“What does Jamie have to do with this?”

“Everything has something to do with everything, Miss Bennett.”

Maya felt the first real wave of fear.

Conrad moved closer.

“Leave my son before he returns. Tell no one about the pregnancy. In exchange, your brother’s debts disappear.”

“And if I refuse?”

Conrad’s smile vanished.

“Then Adrian will learn that the woman he trusted used access to his apartment to steal confidential company documents.”

“That’s a lie.”

“It will be a very convincing lie.”

Maya reached for the door.

Conrad’s final words stopped her.

“You believe Adrian will choose you over his family. I suggest you test that belief before placing three children in danger.”
