Chapter 11 - the house that remembered everything

The old Vale house stood behind rusted gates and overgrown trees.
Adrian had not entered it since childhood.
His mother had died there after a long illness.
His younger brother Julian had supposedly been killed in a car accident less than a year later.
Conrad closed the property and moved Adrian to the city.
Celeste’s brass key opened a side entrance near the library.
Maya remained outside with the children and two protective officers while Adrian, Elias, Jamie, and Celeste entered.
The house smelled of dust and damp wood.
White sheets covered the furniture.
Adrian remembered running through the halls with Julian while their mother pretended not to hear them.
He remembered Julian’s laugh.
He remembered the closed coffin Conrad refused to let him see.
Elias found the concealed room behind the library shelves.
Inside were filing cabinets, recording equipment, and boxes labeled with dates spanning more than twenty years.
Jamie located Maya’s file first.
It contained printed copies of every message she had sent Adrian.
Her clinic voicemail.
The photograph of the ultrasound.
The message telling him there were three babies.
Adrian sat down as he read them.
Maya had begged him to call.
She had told him where she was waiting.
She had believed the silence was his answer.
Elias found another file bearing Adrian’s name.
It contained reports tracking his movements, friendships, and private relationships since adolescence.
Conrad had shaped every part of his life.
Celeste opened a cabinet marked Laurent.
Inside were documents proving Conrad had manipulated her father’s company into dependence.
“I thought he was protecting us,” she said.
“He was collecting ownership,” Elias replied.
Adrian found Julian’s file locked inside a steel drawer.
The brass key opened it.
The first page was a medical report dated two days after Julian’s supposed death.
The patient had survived the accident.
He had suffered a head injury and temporary memory loss.
A private facility had received him under a false name.
Adrian turned the pages with shaking hands.
Payments continued for six years.
Then the records stopped.
“He was alive,” Adrian whispered.
A photograph fell from the folder.
It showed Julian at eighteen, standing beside Conrad outside the private facility.
Conrad had visited him.
Maya entered the room after hearing Adrian’s voice over the radio.
She saw the photograph.
“That is the additional match.”
Elias compared the name and date with the DNA report.
“The laboratory database contained a stored sample from Julian. The children share genetic markers consistent with an uncle.”
“Why would his DNA be in a private database?” Jamie asked.
Celeste answered.
“Conrad used family samples to verify succession claims.”
Adrian continued searching.
At the bottom of the folder was a recent bank transfer.
Someone had received money under Julian’s false identity less than one month earlier.
“He may still be alive,” Maya said.
A sound came from the hallway.
Glass breaking.
The officers outside shouted through the radio.
“Someone entered from the rear.”
The lights went out.
In the darkness, a recorded voice began playing through the house.
Conrad’s voice.
“You have always been too curious, Adrian.”
May you like
Smoke drifted beneath the library door.
The old house had been prepared to destroy its secrets.
