Chapter 12 - the fire Conrad planned twice

The smoke came from burning documents in the basement, not from the main structure.
Conrad’s men had entered through an old service tunnel and activated an incineration system once used for estate records.
Elias led everyone through the side entrance while Jamie carried two boxes of evidence.
Adrian refused to leave Julian’s file behind.
Outside, Maya gathered the frightened children near the police vehicle.
Lila ran to Adrian.
He stopped several feet away, uncertain whether he had the right to touch her.
Lila made the decision for him.
She wrapped both arms around his leg.
“You came back.”
Adrian looked down at her.
The words broke something inside him.
He lifted her carefully.
“I will always come back.”
Noah and Finn watched him.
Maya saw the hope they were trying to hide.
A security vehicle burst through the rear gate.
Conrad was inside.
He had come to confirm the records were destroyed.
Police blocked the driveway before he could leave.
Conrad stepped out with his hands visible.
“This is private property.”
Adrian carried Lila toward him.
“You kept Julian alive.”
Conrad’s expression did not change.
“Your brother was unstable after the accident.”
“He was twelve.”
“He required care.”
“You told me he was dead.”
“You needed to move forward.”
“You erased my brother, Maya, and my children because they interfered with your control.”
Conrad looked at Lila.
“She is a Vale heir. All three of them are.”
Maya stepped between him and the children.
“They are not assets.”
“Everyone is an asset to someone.”
Adrian handed Lila back to Maya.
Then he placed Julian’s file on the hood of the police vehicle.
“You lost.”
Conrad almost smiled.
“The trust requires clean verification. Maya’s criminal history will delay activation for years.”
“She has no criminal history.”
“She will.”
Elias approached with an officer.
“We recovered the original transfer authorizations. The overseas account was controlled by Conrad Vale’s private office.”
Another officer opened a sealed evidence bag containing Jamie’s false confession and the recording equipment found in the house.
Conrad looked toward Celeste.
“You gave them the key.”
“Yes.”
“Your father will lose everything.”
Celeste’s voice shook, but she stood firm.
“Then we will rebuild without you.”
Conrad was detained for questioning while investigators secured the property.
The children watched from inside Jamie’s car.
Adrian did not allow them to see handcuffs or hear the accusations.
Maya appreciated that small instinct.
He was already thinking like a father.
Later that night, the custody petition was suspended.
A judge confirmed the children would remain with Maya until a formal hearing.
Adrian could request supervised contact.
He did not demand immediate access.
Instead, he asked Maya one question.
“What do they need?”
She looked through the window at the sleeping children.
“Time.”
“You have it.”
“And consistency.”
“I’ll be there.”
“They don’t need promises made during a crisis.”
Adrian accepted the criticism.
“Then I’ll prove it without promises.”
Before leaving, he gave Maya Julian’s photograph.
On the back, someone had written an address.
May you like
It belonged to a private medical residence in Vermont.
The date beside it was only nine days old.
