THE CHILDREN WITH HIS EYES / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - the wedding that became a reckoning

The Vale Industries board meeting was held on the same morning Adrian had originally planned to announce his wedding venue.

Conrad arrived with three attorneys.

He had not been formally charged, but investigators had frozen several accounts and restricted his travel.

He entered the boardroom expecting fear.

Instead, he found Maya seated at the head of the table as guardian of the children’s trust shares.

Adrian sat beside her.

Celeste attended by video to provide testimony.

Elias had organized the evidence into a timeline no one could dismiss.

Conrad had intercepted private communications.

He had created fraudulent accounts.

He had manipulated succession rights.

He had concealed Julian’s survival.

He had used company resources to control family members and business partners.

The board voted to remove him.

Only one director opposed the motion.

Conrad remained calm until Maya signed the final resolution.

“You think this company belongs to your children now?” he asked.

“No,” Maya replied. “I think it belongs to every employee you treated as a piece on your board.”

“You are sentimental.”

“You mistook cruelty for intelligence.”

Adrian watched his father lose the authority he had protected at any cost.

He expected satisfaction.

What he felt instead was emptiness.

Conrad stood to leave.

At the door, he looked back.

“You found the Julian file.”

Adrian’s hands tightened.

“Where is he?”

“If he wanted you to know, he would have come home.”

“You kept him hidden.”

“At first.”

Adrian rose.

“What does that mean?”

Conrad smiled.

“It means your brother eventually chose not to return.”

Then he left with his attorneys.

The statement haunted Adrian.

That afternoon, authorities searched the medical residence in Vermont.

Julian was gone.

Staff records showed that a man using his false identity had lived there intermittently for years.

He had checked out nine days earlier.

The security footage had been erased.

Only one item remained in his room.

A recent photograph of Maya’s children at the park.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

They have Conrad’s eyes too, but they do not have to become him.

Adrian read it twice.

“My brother has been watching them.”

Maya examined the handwriting.

“Or someone wants us to think he has.”

Elias searched financial and travel databases.

No reliable trace appeared.

For the first time since the park confrontation, there was nothing urgent to do.

The custody petition had been dismissed.

Conrad’s power was broken.

Maya’s name was cleared.

Jamie’s false confession was invalidated.

Celeste entered a cooperation agreement and left New York to rebuild her father’s company.

The children had a father who arrived when he said he would.

The main battle was over.

On the weekend that would have been Adrian’s wedding, he helped Noah, Finn, and Lila build a tree house in Maya’s garden.

He was terrible at it.

The platform leaned.

One railing had to be rebuilt twice.

Maya watched him follow Noah’s instructions with more patience than he had ever shown in a boardroom.

At sunset, Lila placed a paper crown on Adrian’s head.

“You look silly.”

“I feel powerful.”

“You’re not in charge.”

“Who is?”

“All of us.”

Maya laughed.

Adrian looked at her.

For the first time in five years, the space between them did not feel filled with ghosts.

He did not ask her to start again.

She did not promise she would.

But when he reached for her hand, she allowed their fingers to touch.

It was not a complete reunion.

It was something more honest.

A beginning chosen slowly.

May you like

Then Elias called.

A body had been discovered near the Vermont residence carrying Julian Vale’s identification.
