Chapter 15 - the man who used Julian’s name

The identification belonged to Julian.
The body did not.
Dental records confirmed the dead man had been a former employee of Conrad’s private security company.
He had used Julian’s false identity for at least six months.
Someone had wanted investigators to believe Adrian’s brother was dead for a second time.
Adrian traveled to Vermont with Elias.
Maya remained home with the children, though every instinct told her the mystery had already reached them.
She reopened the DNA report.
The additional match had been generated from a stored sample labeled Julian Vale.
Elias had assumed the sample belonged to Adrian’s brother.
Now there was no certainty.
The laboratory that stored it had been owned indirectly by one of Conrad’s holding companies.
Maya called the laboratory director.
The number was disconnected.
That evening, Noah found an envelope inside the unfinished tree house.
No one had seen it delivered.
Maya opened it carefully.
Inside was a photograph of Adrian and Julian as children.
Adrian was ten.
Julian was eight.
They stood beside their mother in the garden of the old Vale house.
A fourth person had been cut from the photograph.
Only one hand remained visible on Adrian’s mother’s shoulder.
On the back was a message.
Conrad did not hide Julian because of the accident.
He hid him because Julian remembered who caused it.
Beneath the message was a time and location.
Midnight.
The abandoned train station outside town.
Come alone, Maya.
She immediately called Adrian.
His phone was turned off during the police interview.
She called Elias.
No answer.
Jamie read the message over her shoulder.
“You are not going.”
“I know.”
“You said that too quickly.”
“I’m not risking the children.”
“Then we call the police.”
Maya photographed the message and sent it to the detective handling Conrad’s case.
The message failed to deliver.
Her phone lost service.
The lights inside the house flickered.
Jamie checked the security system.
Every exterior camera had gone offline at once.
Maya moved the children into the reinforced safe room Elias had installed.
Lila held the old photograph.
“Who is the other boy?”
“That is your father’s brother.”
“No. The person who was cut out.”
Maya looked again.
The remaining hand wore a ring bearing the Vale family crest.
Conrad wore the same ring.
So did Adrian.
But the hand in the photograph was smaller.
A woman’s hand.
Maya remembered Adrian saying his mother had died after a long illness.
She examined the date printed on the photograph.
It had been taken three months after the date listed on his mother’s death certificate.
A vehicle stopped outside.
Not a black sedan.
Not Conrad’s limousine.
An old blue car.
A man stepped out wearing a dark coat.
From the upstairs window, Maya could not see his face.
He walked directly toward the front door without checking the house number.
He knew where they lived.
The doorbell rang once.
Then twice.
Maya stood behind the locked door with Jamie beside her.
“Who is it?” she called.
The man did not answer.
Instead, he slid a small cassette tape through the mail slot.
A label had been attached to it.
For Adrian, when his children are found.
Maya stared at the handwriting.
It matched the message from the Vermont room.
The man finally spoke through the door.
His voice was quiet.
“My name is Julian Vale.”
Maya’s heart pounded.
“Prove it.”
There was a long silence.
Then he said the one sentence only Adrian’s brother could have known.
“When Adrian was ten, he broke our mother’s music box and blamed me. She knew the truth, but she made us repair it together.”
Maya did not unlock the door.
“Why did you ask me to come alone?”
“I didn’t.”
She looked at the note again.
The handwriting matched.
Julian continued.
“Someone has been using my name to bring you to that station.”
“Who?”
“The person Conrad spent twenty years protecting.”
Maya gripped the door handle.
“Is Conrad working with them?”
“No. Conrad is afraid of them.”
Headlights appeared at the end of the street.
Three dark vehicles turned toward the house.
Julian looked over his shoulder.
“We have less than a minute.”
Maya heard Lila calling from the safe room.
“Mommy, the woman in the picture is on television.”
Maya ran upstairs.
A news report filled the screen.
The reporter stood outside Vale Tower, surrounded by cameras.
Behind her, a woman stepped from a silver vehicle.
She was older than the woman in the childhood photograph, but the resemblance was unmistakable.
Adrian’s mother.
The woman who had supposedly died more than twenty years earlier.
She approached the microphones and looked directly into the cameras.
“My sons have been lied to long enough.”
Maya turned toward the window.
The dark vehicles stopped outside her home.
Men stepped onto the street.
When she looked back toward the front door, Julian had disappeared.
Only the cassette remained.
The television reporter raised her voice over the growing crowd.
“Mrs. Vale, where have you been all these years?”
Adrian’s mother smiled faintly.
“I have been waiting for Conrad to lead me to my grandchildren.”
Then she lifted a recent photograph of Noah, Finn, and Lila.
On the back, written in red ink, were four names.
May you like
The fourth name belonged to a child Maya had never seen.
A child born on the same night as her triplets.
