THE CHILDREN WITH HIS EYES / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - the confession in the red gown

Celeste’s public image had been built on perfect control.

She never raised her voice.

She never appeared without carefully chosen clothing.

She never answered a question before deciding what effect the answer would have.

In the park, wearing a red gown intended for wedding photographs, that control finally collapsed.

Adrian led her away from the cameras and into an empty event tent.

Maya followed because Celeste’s confession belonged to her too.

Elias stood at the entrance.

“Tell me everything,” Adrian said.

Celeste looked at Maya.

“I met Conrad at the estate the day after she told him about the pregnancy.”

“I never told him,” Maya said. “He had me followed from the clinic.”

Celeste closed her eyes.

“He said the children would destroy the trust structure. If you became a father before thirty-five, voting control would transfer away from him.”

Adrian’s voice was cold.

“So he removed Maya.”

“He asked my father for help.”

Laurent Holdings needed Vale Industries to approve a major investment. Celeste’s father agreed to provide financial accounts, attorneys, and private security.

In return, Conrad promised an eventual marriage between Adrian and Celeste.

“I refused at first,” Celeste said. “Then my father showed me evidence that Conrad could ruin us.”

Maya’s anger sharpened.

“So you ruined me instead.”

“Yes.”

The simple answer silenced the room.

Celeste admitted witnessing Jamie’s false confession.

She admitted delivering the forged paternity document.

She admitted telling Maya that Adrian doubted the children were his.

“Did you send the flowers with the listening device?” Maya asked.

“No. That was Conrad.”

“Did you know?”

“Not until later.”

Adrian stepped away from her.

“You stood beside me for five years.”

“I loved you.”

“You studied my grief and used it.”

“At first, I thought you would forget her.”

“I never forgot her.”

Celeste’s face twisted.

“I know.”

She confessed that Adrian had continued searching privately for almost two years. Each time he found a lead, Conrad redirected the investigation.

Elias had been dismissed after questioning irregularities in the evidence.

Celeste had watched Adrian become colder and more obedient because he believed love had made him foolish.

“When did you learn the children were alive?” Adrian asked.

“Three months ago.”

Maya stared at her.

“You knew before the school photograph.”

“I found payments to an investigator in Conrad’s accounts. I followed them.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was afraid.”

Adrian removed the engagement ring from Celeste’s hand.

She did not resist.

“Our wedding is over.”

Celeste looked at the ring in his palm.

“I expected that.”

“This isn’t punishment. It’s reality.”

She nodded, crying silently.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a small brass key.

“Conrad keeps the original records at the old Vale house outside the city. The property has been empty since your mother died.”

Adrian looked at the key.

“What records?”

“Everything. The intercepted messages, the laboratory payments, the false account, and the documents he used to control my father.”

Maya remembered the additional genetic match on the DNA report.

“Is there information about Adrian’s family?”

Celeste’s expression changed.

“What did the test show?”

“A match to someone named Julian Vale.”

Adrian went still.

“My brother.”

Maya looked at him.

“You have a brother?”

“Had.”

Adrian’s voice became almost inaudible.

“He died when I was twelve.”

Celeste stared at the report.

“No,” she whispered. “Conrad told everyone he died.”

Adrian gripped the edge of the table.

“What do you know?”

May you like

Celeste looked toward the tent entrance, as though afraid Conrad might be listening.

“Julian Vale did not die in that accident.”
