THE CHILDREN WITH HIS EYES / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2 - the message he never received

Adrian returned to New York three days later.

He entered the apartment expecting to find Maya asleep on the sofa with a book open across her chest.

Instead, he found silence.

Her coat was gone.

Her favorite mug was missing from the kitchen.

The framed photograph from their first trip together had been removed from the shelf.

A single key lay on the counter.

Adrian called her.

The number was unavailable.

He tried again.

Then again.

His father arrived less than an hour later, accompanied by two security officers.

“What are you doing here?” Adrian asked.

Conrad placed a folder on the kitchen table.

“We have a problem.”

Inside were security photographs of Maya entering Vale Tower after midnight.

There were access logs showing her badge had opened a restricted records room.

There was a bank statement indicating a payment of two million dollars into an overseas account bearing her name.

The evidence was perfect.

Too perfect.

Adrian looked at the empty apartment.

“She wouldn’t do this.”

“You knew her for eighteen months.”

“I knew her.”

“You knew the version she wanted you to see.”

Adrian picked up his phone.

“I’m calling her brother.”

Conrad’s security chief stopped him.

“Jamie Bennett left the country this morning.”

Adrian’s suspicion turned to panic.

“Where?”

“We don’t know.”

Conrad placed one hand on his son’s shoulder.

“She took the money and left with him.”

Adrian knocked the hand away.

“She didn’t take anything.”

“Then why is the apartment empty?”

Adrian had no answer.

He searched until dawn.

He contacted hospitals, airports, hotels, and every friend Maya had ever mentioned.

By morning, his unanswered calls had reached forty-three.

What Adrian did not know was that Maya was sitting in a bus station three states away, staring at a phone that showed no missed calls from him.

Conrad’s men had replaced her phone during the meeting at the estate.

The device looked identical.

Her contacts remained.

Her photographs remained.

But Adrian’s number had been blocked at the network level.

Every message Maya sent appeared to deliver, yet none reached him.

She typed with shaking hands.

Your father threatened Jamie. He says you believe I stole from you. Please tell me this isn’t true.

No response came.

Maya tried again.

I’m pregnant. There are three babies. Adrian, please call me.

Nothing.

At noon, a courier found her at the station.

He handed her an envelope containing a printed email.

The message appeared to have come from Adrian’s private address.

Maya,

My father showed me the evidence. I know what you did. Do not contact me again. If the pregnancy is real, my attorneys will handle it. You will not use a child to return to my life.

Adrian

Maya read it until the words blurred.

She called him one final time.

The line connected.

For two seconds, she heard breathing.

“Adrian?”

A man answered in Adrian’s voice.

The recording had been created from interviews and company speeches.

“You made your choice, Maya. Take the money and disappear.”

The call ended.

Maya stood in the center of the crowded station while strangers moved around her.

She pressed both hands over her stomach.

“I didn’t take his money,” she whispered.

Jamie appeared beside her carrying two bags.

His face was bruised, but he was alive.

“We have to go.”

Maya looked down at the ultrasound envelope.

Somewhere inside her, three heartbeats continued with complete trust.

She made a decision that would shape all their lives.

She would leave.

May you like

Not because Conrad had defeated her.

Because she believed Adrian had abandoned their children before they were born.
