Chapter 8 - locker 17

Amelia insisted that Lily remain at the lake house under guard.

Daniel resisted until Lily took his hand.

“I can stay with Aunt Amelia,” she said.

“Are you sure?”

She nodded.

“Will you find Mommy’s promise?”

Daniel struggled to answer.

“I’m going to try.”

Lily hugged him.

“Bring the rabbit.”

He carried the stuffed rabbit with him when he and Michael left for Union Station under security escort.

The station’s restored main hall was crowded with morning commuters. Sunlight poured through the arched windows. Announcements echoed above the movement of hundreds of people.

No one appeared to notice the Mercer brothers crossing the floor.

The brass token led them to an old private waiting room once reserved for railway executives.

A retired attendant examined the overlapping-circle symbol and unlocked a narrow passage behind the ticket counter.

Below the station was a row of original storage vaults.

Most had been sealed for decades.

Vault 17 accepted the brass token.

Daniel inserted it.

The door opened.

Inside waited a metal case, a video camera, and an envelope addressed to him.

Daniel opened the envelope first.

Claire’s letter was longer than the others.

Daniel,

The evidence inside this case can expose Richard’s financial crimes, but that is not its true purpose.

Richard believes I discovered money hidden by the Mercer family. He is wrong.

I discovered people.

For thirty years, Mercer charities moved vulnerable children through private institutions. Some were adopted legally. Others vanished from official records.

Daniel stopped reading.

Michael turned pale.

“What does she mean?”

Daniel continued.

Northvale was created to hide the financial trail. The trust accounts, shell companies, and political donations protected a network that existed before Victor Hale joined it.

I do not yet know who leads the network.

I know only the symbol they use.

Daniel looked at the overlapping circles engraved on the key.

Claire’s letter continued.

The silver key opens a private archive called the Silver Room. The archive contains identities, payments, and recordings. I entered it once. I copied only part of what I found before someone arrived.

One record carried Lily’s name.

Daniel’s hands became cold.

Michael leaned closer.

“What record?”

Daniel kept reading.

The entry was created before Lily was born.

It described her as an intended beneficiary, but not of my trust.

Someone planned for her future before either of us knew she existed.

Daniel lowered the page.

“This is impossible.”

Michael opened the metal case.

Inside were financial ledgers, photographs, adoption records, and encrypted drives.

The video camera contained a single recording.

Daniel pressed play.

Claire appeared on the small screen inside an underground room lined with silver-colored cabinets.

She whispered toward the lens.

“I found Lily’s file.”

She turned the camera.

A document lay open on a table.

The image shook, but Daniel could read several lines.

Subject: Lily Claire Mercer.

Status: Protected heir.

Guardian assignment: Daniel Mercer.

Contingency guardian: Redacted.

Daniel paused the video.

“Guardian assignment?”

Michael stared at him.

“It sounds like someone selected you.”

“I’m her father.”

“Then why would they describe you as an assignment?”

Daniel resumed the footage.

Claire opened another folder.

Before the camera focused, a door sounded behind her.

She turned sharply.

A distorted voice came from outside the frame.

“You were warned not to enter this room.”

Claire whispered one name.

The recording ended before Daniel could understand it.

He replayed the final seconds.

The name remained unclear.

Michael moved toward the vault door.

“We need to take everything to the police.”

A security guard blocked him.

“Not yet.”

Daniel looked at the man.

The guard had arrived with Amelia that morning. His identification named him as Peter Sloan.

But Daniel now noticed something strange.

A white line of candle wax marked the cuff of his jacket.

The same wax found inside the red shoe.

Sloan drew a pistol.

“Put the case down,” he said.
