Chapter 14 - the fire that erased the hospital

The former hospital stood beyond a locked gate in the Green Mountains.
Its stone walls remained intact despite the fire. Black marks stained several windows, but much of the building had been repaired recently.
Silver Door Holdings had claimed the property was empty.
Fresh tire tracks proved otherwise.
Federal agents surrounded the grounds before Daniel entered.
He was ordered to remain behind the outer perimeter.
He refused until Officer Reyes reminded him that Lily was waiting safely with Amelia.
“You have one daughter who needs you to come home,” Reyes said. “Do not forget her while searching for the other.”
Daniel stayed beside the command vehicle.
Agents entered through the east wing.
For fifteen minutes, the radio carried only short reports.
Empty rooms.
Recently removed beds.
Medical packaging.
Computer servers destroyed.
Then an agent found a concealed elevator behind the former surgical theater.
The underground level had not appeared on any building plan.
Daniel watched the body-camera feed from a monitor.
Silver-colored doors lined the corridor.
The same corridor Claire filmed years earlier.
The Silver Room had been digital, but it also had a physical center.
Each door opened into an archive chamber.
Photographs.
Voice recordings.
Medical histories.
Adoption documents.
Profiles of children linked to wealthy families.
The network had not simply stolen money.
It had shaped families, inheritances, and guardianships for decades.
In the final room, agents found a child’s bedroom.
Two small beds stood beneath painted stars.
One bed had been used recently.
On the wall hung drawings of two girls holding hands.
Every picture showed one girl with dark hair and one with lighter hair.
Lily had dark hair.
The girl in Margaret’s photograph was lighter.
Daniel’s phone rang from an unlisted number.
He answered.
A woman spoke.
“You should have listened to Claire.”
Daniel recognized the controlled pauses.
Caroline.
“Where is Rose?”
“Safe.”
“You took her.”
“I raised her.”
“You let Claire believe she had been abducted.”
“She was abducted. Just not by me.”
“Who took her?”
“The people your family served.”
“My family did not serve them.”
“Your father did. Your grandfather did. The Mercer Foundation was built to move children without questions.”
“Then why protect Richard?”
“I never protected Richard. I used him to expose the archive.”
“You used Lily.”
“I frightened her. I did not harm her.”
“You took her from preschool.”
“To determine what Claire told her.”
“She is four years old.”
“She remembers more than you think.”
Daniel fought the urge to shout.
“Let me speak to Rose.”
Silence.
Then a child’s voice came through the phone.
“Hello?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Her voice sounded like Lily’s, but softer.
“Rose?”
“Aunt Caroline says you know my sister.”
“I do.”
“Does she have the rabbit?”
Daniel looked at the stuffed rabbit in the command vehicle.
“Yes.”
“Tell her I still have the other one.”
The line went silent.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Agents found a second stuffed rabbit beneath one of the beds.
Inside its ear was a small key.
Not silver.
Gold.
A note had been sewn into the fabric.
The silver key opens the record.
The gold key opens the choice.
Daniel turned toward the monitor as an agent opened the final cabinet.
Inside was a live video screen.
Caroline sat in an unknown room with Rose beside her.
Claire’s missing audio recorder rested on the table.
Caroline pressed play.
Claire’s voice filled the hospital.
“If Daniel reaches this recording, then I failed to return for Rose.”
Daniel stepped closer to the screen.
Claire continued.
“Daniel, you must understand something before you decide who to trust.”
The recording crackled.
“Caroline did not take our daughter.”
Caroline looked directly into the camera.

Claire’s next sentence changed everything.
“She helped me hide her.”
