Chapter 13 - the girl in the photograph

Victor Hale was transferred to a guarded medical unit.

The substance in the dart was a powerful sedative, not poison.

Whoever attacked him wanted silence, not death.

Security footage from the police building showed no intruder.

The dart had been fired through a maintenance opening connected to an abandoned evidence shaft.

Someone had studied the building before choosing the attack.

Caroline’s network reached farther than Daniel imagined.

The claim about twins could not be verified from Claire’s altered hospital records. The delivery room logs had disappeared. The attending physician retired shortly afterward and moved overseas.

But one nurse remained.

Margaret Ellis lived in a small town near the Canadian border.

Daniel, Michael, Amelia, and Officer Reyes traveled there under federal protection.

Margaret was eighty-one and nearly blind.

When Daniel showed her Claire’s photograph, she began to cry.

“I waited for you,” she said.

“You know who I am?”

“You have Claire’s eyes when you’re angry.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“Did Claire give birth to twins?”

Margaret looked toward Officer Reyes.

“I signed an agreement.”

“The people who asked you to sign it altered medical records and may have abducted a child,” Reyes said. “That agreement cannot protect them.”

Margaret’s hands trembled.

“Claire arrived under another name. She said someone was watching the hospital. She wanted no Mercer family members informed until after the birth.”

“Why?”

“She believed Richard planned to take the baby.”

“Babies,” Daniel said.

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Daniel’s chest ached.

“Two girls?”

“Yes.”

“Were they healthy?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“One child remained with Claire. The other was removed during a false emergency evacuation.”

“Who took her?”

“A doctor I had never seen before. She carried official credentials. Security escorted her.”

“Was it Caroline?”

“I don’t know.”

Margaret reached into a drawer beside her chair.

She removed an old photograph.

Claire lay in a hospital bed holding two newborn girls.

The babies wore matching silver bracelets.

Daniel recognized Lily’s bracelet. Claire had stored it in a small box of childhood keepsakes.

The second bracelet carried a different name.

Rose.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“Why didn’t Claire tell me?”

“She tried to find the missing child. She believed telling you would put both girls at risk.”

“She let me believe Lily was the only baby.”

“She was terrified.”

Daniel stood and walked toward the window.

For four years, another child might have existed somewhere in the world.

A girl the same age as Lily.

A girl taken before Daniel knew she was alive.

Margaret continued.

“Claire returned two years later. She said she had found evidence that Rose was alive.”

“Where?”

“She didn’t tell me. She gave me this.”

Margaret handed Daniel a small music-box mechanism.

When he turned the key, it played the same melody Lily had described from Caroline’s silver watch.

Beneath the mechanism was a folded photograph.

It showed a little girl standing in front of an unfamiliar stone building.

She looked almost exactly like Lily.

Behind her stood Caroline Vale.

On the back, Claire had written:

Rose is alive.

She calls Caroline her mother.

Do not take her until I understand why she was chosen.

Daniel looked at Amelia.

“What stone building is this?”

Amelia examined the architecture.

“I’ve seen it before.”

“Where?”

“In one of the Mercer Foundation’s old reports. It was a private children’s hospital in Vermont.”

Michael searched the foundation database.

The hospital had closed three years earlier after a fire.

The property now belonged to a shell company.

Its name was Silver Door Holdings.
