Chapter 12 - the hospital file

Lily’s original birth records had been altered.
The hospital database listed Daniel as her father, but the audit history showed that the entry had been added eleven days after her birth.
The original field had been sealed under a court order.
The judge who issued that order had died the previous year.
His former clerk now worked for Northvale.
Officer Reyes obtained access through the state medical archive.
The sealed form named no father.
Instead, it carried a laboratory number.
Specimen 4417.
Daniel sat in the police conference room while a forensic specialist explained that the code likely referred to fertility treatment or private genetic testing.
Claire had never told Daniel she underwent either.
“We were trying to have a child,” he said. “She became pregnant naturally.”
The specialist did not challenge him.
“Medical records can be incomplete.”
“Or manufactured.”
“Yes.”
Michael paced near the window.
“This is what they want. They want you questioning whether Lily is yours.”
Daniel looked at the altered birth certificate.
“She is mine.”
“I know.”
“No laboratory number changes that.”
Amelia sat across from him.
“Claire may have hidden the circumstances because she feared someone would use them against you.”
“Someone already is.”
Officer Reyes entered with new information.
Victor Hale had been arrested at a private airfield while attempting to leave the country.
He requested a meeting with Daniel.
Reyes opposed it.
Daniel insisted.
Hale was brought into an interview room wearing handcuffs and a wrinkled suit. Without his expensive glasses and controlled boardroom manner, he looked older than Daniel remembered.
“You caused quite a disaster,” Hale said.
“You emptied my daughter’s trust.”
“Richard authorized the movement.”
“You processed forged confirmation.”
“I processed credentials that passed every verification.”
“Who created them?”
Hale leaned back.
“You think I’m going to trade the only information keeping me alive?”
“You were arrested while trying to disappear.”
“I was leaving because Caroline returned.”
Daniel watched him closely.
“You know she is alive.”
“Everyone at the top knows.”
“Who is at the top?”
Hale smiled faintly.
“You still imagine a person. A hidden chair at the end of a table. A name that makes everything simple.”
“What should I imagine?”
“A system that has survived by replacing everyone who tried to control it.”
“Who chose Lily?”
Hale’s smile vanished.
“That is the question Claire should never have asked.”
“Answer it.”
“Lily was designated before birth because of you.”
Daniel waited.
Hale continued.
“The Mercer family is not important because of its money. It is important because of access. Judges, senators, hospitals, private schools, adoption agencies.”
“Access to what?”
“Children with particular backgrounds. Particular inheritances. Particular parents.”
Daniel fought to remain calm.
“What does that have to do with Lily?”
“Claire belonged to a bloodline the network tracked for decades. You belonged to a family positioned to protect it. Your marriage brought both lines together.”
Michael stared at Hale. “You’re describing selective breeding.”
“I’m describing wealthy people turning human lives into investments.”
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“Was Lily created through a laboratory?”
Hale looked at the camera in the corner.
Then he looked back at Daniel.
“The sample number on her birth record does not belong to a father.”
“What does it belong to?”
“A second child.”
No one spoke.
Daniel leaned forward.
“What second child?”
Hale lowered his voice.
“Claire gave birth to twins.”
Daniel stood so quickly that the chair struck the wall.
“No.”
“One child was placed in your arms.”
“Where is the other?”
Hale smiled without humor.
“That is the secret Caroline has spent four years protecting.”
A gunshot sounded in the corridor.
The lights went out.
When emergency power returned, Victor Hale was slumped across the table.
No one had entered the locked room.
A small dart protruded from his shoulder.
He was still alive, but unconscious.
On the observation window, someone had written a message in red lipstick.

One child opened the door.
The other will close it.
