Chapter 15 - the choice behind the golden door

The federal agents secured every archive chamber beneath the hospital.
They found evidence capable of destroying careers, governments, charities, and family dynasties.
But they did not find Caroline or Rose.
The live broadcast had been transmitted through multiple encrypted servers. By the time investigators traced the final signal, the location had been abandoned.
Only one image remained on the screen.
A golden door.
Claire’s recovered recording was incomplete.
The section after her statement about Caroline had been erased.
Technicians believed another copy might exist inside the network, but accessing it required the gold key found in Rose’s stuffed rabbit.
No one knew what the key opened.
For the first time since the birthday party, Daniel returned home with Lily.
Police had completed their search of the house. The compromised security system had been removed. Amelia’s team installed new cameras disconnected from every outside company.
Lily placed her repaired stuffed rabbit on her bed.
“Did you find the promise?” she asked.
“Part of it.”
“Did you find Rose?”
Daniel sat beside her.
He had not told Lily everything.
But he would not lie.
“I found out she is real.”
Lily smiled as though she had always known.
“She’s my sister.”
“Yes.”
“Is she coming home?”
“I hope so.”
Lily leaned against him.
“Mommy said Rose had to wait until the bad people forgot which girl had the key.”
Daniel looked at her.
“When did Mommy say that?”
“In the star room.”
“You were a baby when Mommy died.”
Lily shook her head.
“Not that Mommy.”
A cold silence filled the bedroom.
Daniel crouched in front of her.
“Who took you to the star room?”
“The lady who looks like Mommy.”
“Caroline?”
Lily nodded.
“Was Rose there?”
“Yes.”
Daniel struggled to understand.
Caroline had reunited the girls without his knowledge.
She had entered Lily’s preschool under a false identity, taken her to unknown locations, and returned her before anyone noticed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“She said you would be sad because you forgot the first time.”
“What first time?”
Lily studied his face.
“When you chose me.”
Daniel’s phone rang downstairs.
Amelia answered it before he reached the living room.
Her expression told him the news was serious.
“Richard, Evelyn, and Bethany have been charged,” she said. “Michael has entered a cooperation agreement.”
Daniel felt no relief.
“What happened?”
“Victor Hale woke up.”
“And?”
“He gave federal investigators a location connected to the network.”
“The golden door?”
“No. A private clinic in Maryland.”
Daniel waited.
Amelia continued.
“The clinic stored genetic records used by the Silver Room. Investigators found Lily and Rose’s files.”
“Do the files identify their biological parents?”
“Yes.”
Daniel could not speak for a moment.
Amelia held out a sealed report.
He took it but did not open it.
“Tell me.”
“Claire is listed as their biological mother.”
“And the father?”
“The name is encrypted.”
“Then how do you know anything?”
“Because Victor gave them the decryption code.”
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
Lily stood at the top, holding her rabbit.
Amelia lowered her voice.
“The report says the man listed as their biological father was declared dead before the twins were born.”
Daniel opened the envelope.
Most of the page was covered with black redaction marks.
One line remained visible.
Relationship to designated guardian Daniel Mercer: Identical genetic match.
Daniel read it again.
“That’s impossible.”
Amelia looked frightened.
“The laboratory says you and the twins’ biological father have the same DNA.”
“I don’t have a twin.”
“Not according to your birth records.”
Daniel’s phone vibrated.
A video message appeared from an unknown sender.
The image showed Rose standing beside the golden door.
Caroline stood behind her.
A man entered the frame.
He was Daniel’s height.
Daniel’s age.
He had Daniel’s face.
The man looked into the camera and spoke.
“Claire made you believe you were Lily’s father.”
He placed one hand on the golden door.
“But she never told you which Daniel she married.”
The video ended.
Lily’s rabbit began playing a melody by itself.
A hidden compartment opened inside its chest.
Daniel reached inside and removed an old photograph.
Two identical boys stood beside Richard and Evelyn Mercer.
Daniel recognized himself.
He did not recognize the boy holding his hand.
On the back, someone had written one sentence.
Only one son was supposed to survive.
Before Daniel could call Officer Reyes, the new security alarm activated.
Someone was standing outside the front door.
The camera showed a man wearing Daniel’s face.
He held Rose in his arms.
Behind them, a black vehicle waited with its engine running.
The man looked directly into the camera.
Then he raised the golden key.

“Open the door, brother,” he said.
“I brought your daughter home.”
