Chapter 3 - the signature he never made

Daniel had signed thousands of documents during his years as chief financial officer of Mercer Holdings.

Contracts.

Acquisitions.

Trust amendments.

Emergency authorizations.

His signature had been analyzed, digitized, and stored by half a dozen departments.

But the trust document governing Lily’s inheritance required more than a signature.

It required a biometric confirmation.

A voice code.

And a physical key.

The silver key Lily had mentioned.

Daniel looked at Bethany.

“What did you show her?”

Bethany shook her head. “Michael is lying.”

“What signature sample did you give Northvale?”

“I gave them nothing.”

Michael walked toward the overturned cake table.

He reached beneath a pile of wrapping paper and lifted a thin leather folder.

Richard’s expression changed instantly.

Michael held the folder out to Officer Reyes.

“This was supposed to be presented to Daniel tonight.”

Reyes opened it.

Inside was a custody agreement.

Daniel did not need to read every page. The first paragraph told him enough.

It stated that Daniel’s work obligations, grief, and frequent travel made him unable to provide a stable home for Lily. It transferred temporary guardianship to Richard and Evelyn Mercer.

Temporary guardianship could become permanent after ninety days.

At the bottom waited a blank signature line.

Beside it was an ink pad and a small silver recorder.

Daniel stared at the recorder.

His voice code.

They had planned to make him repeat the necessary phrase.

“How?” he asked.

No one answered.

Daniel turned to Michael.

“How were they going to make me sign this?”

Michael swallowed.

“Father said you would be emotional after Lily caused a scene. Mother would convince you she needed stability. Bethany would remind you about the board investigation. Then they would tell you the trust funds could only be restored if you cooperated.”

“They stole her money so they could use it against me.”

Michael lowered his eyes.

Daniel looked at Richard.

“You locked a four-year-old child in a closet to create evidence that she was unstable.”

Richard’s expression remained cold.

“She is difficult.”

“She is four.”

“She needs structure.”

“She needed a birthday.”

Bethany crossed her arms. “You are acting as though she was harmed.”

Lily’s small hand tightened around Daniel’s neck.

He kept his voice low.

“She was terrified.”

“Children become frightened when their parents teach them to distrust family.”

Daniel took a step toward Bethany.

Officer Reyes moved slightly between them, not because Daniel had threatened her, but because the tension in the room had become dangerous.

Daniel stopped.

“What did you ask her about the key?”

Bethany looked away.

Michael answered.

“They believe your wife left instructions for Lily’s inheritance before she died.”

Daniel went still.

His wife, Claire, had died in a highway collision two years earlier.

Her estate had created a trust for Lily containing shares in a technology company Claire helped build before their marriage. The shares had grown rapidly in value.

But eight million dollars was only a fraction of the trust.

Claire had also placed sealed documents under the control of an independent trustee.

Daniel had never opened them.

They were meant for Lily when she turned twenty-one.

“What instructions?” Daniel asked.

Michael hesitated again.

Richard stepped closer.

“You have embarrassed this family enough.”

Officer Reyes turned toward him. “Mr. Mercer, you should understand that every attempt to interrupt this conversation will be included in my report.”

Richard stared at him.

Reyes did not move.

Michael continued.

“Northvale believed Claire created a second account. One that isn’t listed in the official trust inventory.”

Daniel shook his head. “That makes no sense.”

“It did to Father. Especially after he received the photograph.”

“What photograph?”

Michael reached inside the folder and removed an image.

It showed Claire leaving a private bank in Switzerland six months before her death.

She was carrying Lily, who had been a baby at the time.

Around Claire’s neck hung a silver key.

The same key Daniel had found in Lily’s bedroom three weeks ago.

Claire had hidden it inside a stuffed rabbit.

Daniel had placed it in his home safe.

He had told no one.

Yet Lily had said the family asked her about it.

Someone had been inside Daniel’s house.

Officer Reyes’s radio sounded again.

The officers searching the SUV had found a burner phone.

The last message on its screen had been sent only minutes before the birthday party.

Reyes read it aloud.

“If Daniel refuses, use the girl. He will sign when she asks him.”

Lily began to cry again.

Then a reply appeared on the phone.

It came from a contact saved under one letter.

The message contained only five words.

The camera was not disabled.
