Chapter 4 - the woman in red shoes

Officer Reyes ordered the estate sealed.

No vehicles entered or left. Every guest surrendered their name and identification. Officers searched the kitchen, utility rooms, upstairs bedrooms, basement, and garden structures.

They found no woman wearing red shoes.

They did find a pair of red heels beside the servants’ entrance.

The shoes were new.

The soles were wet with mud.

Inside one shoe was a drop of white candle wax.

Daniel knew the estate well enough to understand the clue.

His mother kept candles in one unusual place.

The old family chapel.

The building stood beyond the north garden, hidden behind rows of tall hedges. Richard used it for private meetings because it had no network connection and no permanent cameras.

Daniel carried Lily outside while Officer Reyes and two other officers followed.

The night air had turned cold. Party lights glowed through the dining room windows behind them, making the house appear peaceful from a distance.

It was a lie, like so many things in the Mercer family.

“Daddy, I don’t want to see the red-shoe lady.”

“You won’t.”

“She knows Mommy.”

Daniel stopped.

Reyes stopped beside him.

“What did she say about Mommy?”

Lily pressed her cheek against Daniel’s chest.

“She said Mommy made a promise and Daddy broke it.”

Daniel’s throat tightened.

“What promise?”

“She didn’t tell me. She said the silver key opens the promise.”

They continued toward the chapel.

The wooden door was unlocked.

Inside, dozens of candles burned along the stone walls. Their flames moved in the draft from an open rear window.

On the central table rested a laptop connected to a portable satellite transmitter.

Officer Reyes put on gloves and approached it.

The screen showed a live feed from the birthday room.

Four different camera angles.

Someone had been watching the party from the chapel.

Beside the laptop lay photographs of Daniel’s home, Lily’s preschool, Claire’s grave, and the downtown offices of Mercer Holdings.

Daniel felt a cold pressure behind his ribs.

This was not a desperate theft.

It was surveillance.

Reyes opened a notebook.

Most pages contained dates, addresses, and short observations.

Daniel arrives at 7:10.

Child sleeps in east bedroom.

Key not found in office.

Claire’s storage unit still sealed.

One sentence had been written across the final page.

The child remembers more than expected.

Daniel turned Lily’s face away from the table.

Officer Reyes photographed the evidence.

“There’s another room,” he said.

A narrow door behind the altar led to a storage chamber.

Inside were several boxes marked with the Northvale logo.

They contained copies of trust records, medical files, family photographs, and legal documents dating back more than twenty years.

One file carried Daniel’s name.

Another carried Claire’s.

Reyes reached for Claire’s file.

Daniel stopped him.

“Before you open it, I need Lily taken somewhere safe.”

Reyes nodded. “One of my officers can escort you to the station.”

“No. Anyone involved could know the local procedures.”

“Where do you trust?”

Daniel thought of the few people who had stood beside him after Claire died.

Only one name came immediately.

Judge Amelia Grant.

Claire’s godmother.

A retired federal judge who lived two counties away and owned a private security company.

Daniel called her.

She answered on the first ring.

“Daniel?”

He had not spoken to her in six months.

“How did you know it was me?”

“I have been waiting for this call for two years.”

Daniel stared at the candles.

“What do you mean?”

Amelia’s voice became quiet.

“Claire left instructions. If anyone ever asked Lily about a silver key, I was to bring you both to a secure location immediately.”

Daniel looked at Officer Reyes.

Reyes was watching the open chapel window.

Outside, something moved behind the hedges.

An officer ran toward it.

A figure in dark clothing sprinted across the north lawn.

For one second, the moonlight caught the runner’s shoes.

They were red.
