THE CAMERA RECORDED / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - claire’s final instruction

The runner escaped through a maintenance gate before officers could close the northern road.

A search dog followed the trail to a drainage canal, where the footprints disappeared.

Officer Reyes found a discarded black coat and a blond wig. The woman had changed her appearance before leaving the estate.

She had planned every part of her escape.

Judge Amelia Grant arrived forty minutes later in a dark sedan with two licensed security officers.

She was sixty-eight, silver-haired, and composed in a way Daniel remembered from childhood. Claire had trusted her more than anyone.

Amelia stepped from the car and looked directly at Lily.

Her expression softened.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

Lily recognized her from old photographs.

“Aunt Amelia?”

Amelia opened her arms but did not approach until Lily looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

Lily reached for her.

Amelia held her carefully.

“You’re safe,” she said. “Your mother made sure you would be.”

Daniel studied her.

“Claire knew something like this could happen.”

“She feared it.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

“She tried.”

Daniel’s grief, which he had learned to carry quietly, returned with sudden force.

After Claire’s death, people told him that grief softened with time. They were wrong. It simply became familiar.

Amelia passed Lily back to him.

“Not here,” she said. “We need to leave.”

Officer Reyes joined them.

“I need a formal statement from Mr. Mercer.”

“You’ll receive one,” Amelia replied. “But his daughter needs a secure environment first.”

Reyes considered her request.

He looked toward the chapel where evidence technicians were processing the files.

“Someone inside the Mercer family knew the camera backup remained active,” he said. “Someone outside the family was watching the entire event. Until we know whether local officials are involved, I agree that the child should be moved.”

Richard shouted from the terrace.

“You cannot take her.”

Daniel turned.

His father had been escorted outside by an officer. Evelyn, Bethany, and Michael followed.

No one had been arrested yet, but none of them were free to leave.

Richard pointed toward Lily.

“That child is a beneficiary of a family trust. She belongs under this family’s protection.”

Daniel walked toward him.

“She belongs with her father.”

“You have no idea what Claire placed in that trust.”

“Neither do you.”

Richard’s expression revealed the truth.

He knew more than he claimed.

Daniel stopped a few feet away.

“What did Northvale promise you?”

Richard smiled without warmth.

“You think this began with Northvale?”

Evelyn whispered, “Richard, stop.”

He ignored her.

“The Mercer family existed before your wife arrived. It will exist after her secrets are exposed.”

“What secrets?”

Richard looked at Lily.

Officer Reyes immediately moved between them.

“That’s enough.”

Richard laughed. “You are protecting the wrong man, Officer.”

Amelia stepped forward.

“Richard, Claire anticipated every threat except one.”

Richard’s confidence faded slightly.

Amelia continued.

“She believed you would come after the money. She never believed you would use Lily.”

Richard said nothing.

“That mistake will cost you everything,” Amelia said.

Daniel left the estate with Lily and Amelia.

As the car passed through the gate, Lily finally fell asleep against his chest.

Amelia sat opposite them.

“There is a secure house near Lake Carrow,” she said. “Claire purchased it through a private holding company. No Mercer has ever been there.”

“You knew about it for two years?”

“I was required to remain silent until one of three conditions occurred.”

“What conditions?”

“Someone asked Lily about the key. Someone attempted to transfer the trust. Or the surveillance system at the Mercer estate transmitted an emergency recording.”

“All three happened tonight.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked down at Lily.

“What did Claire know?”

Amelia removed a sealed envelope from her bag.

Claire’s handwriting appeared across the front.

For Daniel, when the family finally shows him who they are.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, Richard has found the first account.

Do not let him find the second.

Trust Amelia.

Protect Lily.

And whatever happens, do not open the silver door alone.

Daniel read the final sentence twice.

“What silver door?”

Amelia looked toward the road behind them.

May you like

A pair of headlights had followed the car through every turn.

“I was hoping you knew,” she said.
