Chapter 8 - Nine Minutes

The recovered footage began with Emma shouting.
Emma: “Why are we stopping?”
Tyler was gripping the steering wheel.
Tyler: “Mom told me to drive.”
Emma: “Where?”
Diane's voice came from behind them.
Diane: “To the old warehouse.”
Emma: “Why?”
Diane: “Because your father left something there.”
Emma: “Dad is dead.”
Diane: “Exactly.”
The video skipped.
Then Emma heard Tyler ask a question.
Tyler: “What if she finds out?”
Diane: “She won't.”
Emma leaned forward.
Emma: “Find out what?”
Diane did not answer.
The car continued through the rain.
Then headlights appeared behind them.
A black SUV.
It followed closely.
Tyler became nervous.
Tyler: “Who's that?”
Diane looked through the rear window.
Diane: “Don't slow down.”
Emma turned around.
Emma: “Mom?”
Diane: “Keep driving.”
The SUV moved closer.
Then the camera shook.
A voice came from outside.
A man's voice.
Man: “Pull over.”
Emma froze.
She knew that voice too.
It belonged to Mr. Reed.
The family attorney.
The recording ended.
Emma looked at Detective Mason.
Emma: “Why was my attorney following us?”
Officer Mason: “That's what we're trying to determine.”
Diane suddenly whispered:
Diane: “He wasn't following us.”
Emma: “Then who was he following?”
Diane looked at the screen.
Diane: “Your father.”
Silence filled the room.
Emma: “My father was dead.”

Diane's eyes lifted.
Diane: “Not when this recording was made.”
