Chapter 14 - The Night He Disappeared
Diane finally told Emma the story.
Six months earlier, Emma's father had discovered the financial fraud.
He confronted Victoria.
Then he discovered someone else was involved.
His own brother.
Daniel.
Daniel had returned after years away.
He wanted control of the company.
Emma's father refused.
A confrontation followed.
Then Emma's father disappeared.
Diane said she found the car abandoned.
She believed her husband was dead.
But no body was ever recovered.
Instead, Daniel appeared.
He claimed Emma's father had left voluntarily.
Diane didn't believe him.
She secretly investigated.
That was when she discovered the shell company.
She also discovered that someone was using Emma's identity to move money.
Diane became terrified.
She tried to protect Emma.
But every attempt made her look more suspicious.
Then Tyler became involved.
The accident happened.
Diane thought blaming Emma would keep Tyler alive.
It was wrong.
But she believed she had no other choice.
Emma listened without interrupting.
Finally she asked:
Emma: “Where is Dad?”
Diane shook her head.
Diane: “I don't know.”
Emma: “Do you believe he's alive?”
Diane looked toward the darkness outside the warehouse.
Diane: “I don't know what to believe anymore.”
Detective Mason entered.
Officer Mason: “We found something.”
He held up a photograph.
It showed a man standing outside a private medical facility.
Emma stared.
The man looked like her father.
But there was one problem.
The photograph had been taken yesterday.
Emma whispered:
Emma: “That's impossible.”
Detective Mason turned the photograph over.
There was a handwritten message.
He is waiting for her.
Emma looked up.
Emma: “For me?”

The detective didn't answer.
Then every light in the warehouse went out.
