Chapter 4 - The Trust

The attorney refused to speak while Diane remained in the room.
After she left, he locked the door.
Mr. Reed: “Your father believed someone was trying to take control of the company.”
Emma: “Who?”
Mr. Reed: “He never named the person.”
Emma: “Did he suspect my mother?”
The attorney did not answer.
That was answer enough.
Emma felt her hands tremble.
Mr. Reed continued.
Mr. Reed: “Your father left instructions. If anything happened to him, I was supposed to deliver certain documents to you.”
Emma: “What documents?”
He placed an envelope on the bed.
Emma opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Her father stood beside the family car.
On the back, he had written one sentence.
Trust the camera.
Emma stared at the words.
Mr. Reed: “He told me the truth would eventually be recorded.”
Emma: “Recorded where?”
Mr. Reed: “He didn't say.”
Emma suddenly remembered the unknown message.
The camera survived.
She showed the attorney.
His face drained of color.
Mr. Reed: “Who sent this?”
Emma: “I don't know.”
Mr. Reed: “Do not answer any unknown calls.”
Emma: “Why?”
He looked toward the door.
Mr. Reed: “Because if your father was right, someone has already realized the evidence survived.”
That night, Emma heard footsteps outside her room.
Slow.
Careful.
They stopped.
Then the door opened slightly.
Emma held her breath.
A shadow appeared.
Someone entered.
Emma reached for the call button.
The figure froze.
Then whispered:
Voice: “You shouldn't have opened the envelope.”
Emma stared into the darkness.
Emma: “Who are you?”
The figure stepped backward.
Emma pressed the call button.
The hallway lights switched on.
The room was empty.

Only one thing remained on the floor.
