Chapter 9 - THE FIRST LIE

Emma finally opened the document.
The first page was a medical evaluation.
Her name.
Her date of birth.
Her history.
But the conclusion was different from everything Julian had ever told her.
The report stated that her fertility indicators were within normal range.
Emma's hands shook.
“I was never infertile.”
Garrison said nothing.
She looked at the next page.
A second evaluation.
Same conclusion.
A third.
Same conclusion.
Six years of appointments.
Six years of blame.
Six years of shame.
Built on a lie.
Emma looked at Julian.
“You knew.”
He swallowed.
“I didn't know everything.”
“You knew enough.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“Emma, this isn't the place.”
Emma looked at her.
“It became the place when your son destroyed my life.”
Margaret fell silent.
Julian whispered:
“You don't know what happened.”
“Then tell me.”
He looked toward Garrison.
Garrison's expression gave nothing away.
Julian finally said:
“My father made decisions I didn't understand.”
Emma stared.
“Your father?”
Julian nodded.
“He was involved.”
“In what?”
Julian hesitated.
Then every light in the ballroom suddenly went out.
People gasped.
Emergency lights came on.
The room was dim.
A scream came from near the entrance.
When the lights returned, the black envelope was gone.
Emma's face went pale.
May you like
Garrison looked toward the doors.
Someone had stolen the evidence.
