Chapter 12 - JULIAN'S LAST DEFENSE

Julian found Emma outside.
He looked exhausted.
“Emma.”
She stopped.
“What?”
“I never wanted this to happen.”
She stared at him.
“You ruined six years of my life.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
He looked at Garrison.
“From him.”
Emma shook her head.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it's true.”
Garrison remained silent.
Julian stepped closer.
“You think he's helping you?”
Emma said nothing.
“He has his own reasons.”
Garrison finally spoke.
“That's true.”
Julian looked surprised.
Garrison continued:
“But at least mine don't involve blaming an innocent woman.”
Julian's face hardened.
“You don't know what happened.”
“I know enough.”
Julian turned toward Emma.
“Your pregnancy changes everything.”
Emma frowned.
“Why?”
Julian looked genuinely frightened.
“Because now they know.”
“Who?”
He stopped.
His eyes moved toward the ballroom.
Then he whispered:
“They've been waiting for this.”
Emma's heart raced.
“For what?”
Julian didn't answer.
He walked away.
Garrison watched him disappear.
Emma turned.
“What did he mean?”
Garrison looked at her.
“I don't know.”

Emma stared.
For the first time, she wasn't sure whether Garrison was telling the truth.
