Chapter 4 - THE NIGHT THE FILE DISAPPEARED
Garrison arrived twenty minutes later.
He brought a locked case.
Inside were copies of old documents.
Emma watched him spread them across the table.
“This investigation began six years ago.”
“About Julian?”
“About money.”
Garrison explained that several financial transactions had been routed through companies connected to Julian's family.
At first, they looked legitimate.
Then an investigator discovered irregular transfers.
The trail led toward a medical facility.
The same facility where Emma had received treatment.
Emma's face went pale.
“You think my medical records were altered?”
“I think someone had access to them.”
“Who?”
Garrison looked at the documents.
“We don't know.”
Emma stared at him.
“You said this investigation disappeared.”
“It did.”
“What happened?”
Garrison leaned back.
“Evidence vanished.”
“People?”
His eyes hardened.
“Some people stopped talking.”
Emma felt a chill.
“And you?”
“I was forced out.”
“By Julian's family?”
Garrison didn't answer.
Instead, he placed one final document on the table.
It was a photograph.
Julian's father stood beside several men.
One of them was Garrison.
But Garrison looked much younger.
Emma stared.
“You worked with him.”
“For a time.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought he was trying to expose corruption.”
“And he wasn't?”
Garrison looked away.
“That depends on which version of the story you believe.”
Emma slowly understood.
The truth wasn't one secret.
