THE BLACK ENVELOPE / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - THE SECOND FILE

After the ballroom was secured, the attorneys took Emma into a private room.

Garrison followed.

Julian remained outside with security.

Emma looked at the attorneys.

“Tell me the truth.”

One of them placed another folder on the table.

“This was recovered from a private archive.”

Emma opened it.

The documents were older.

Some were handwritten.

Some were marked confidential.

One page contained a list of names.

Several were crossed out.

One remained.

Garrison Blackwood.

Emma looked up.

“What is this?”

The attorney said:

“A record of people connected to the original investigation.”

“Was Garrison investigating my husband?”

“Not exactly.”

Emma's heart raced.

“Then what?”

The attorney hesitated.

“He was investigating something connected to your husband.”

“What's the difference?”

“A very large one.”

Emma turned another page.

There was a photograph.

A younger Garrison.

Julian's father.

And a third man whose face had been torn from the photograph.

Emma stared.

“Who was he?”

The attorney said:

“We don't know.”

Garrison interrupted.

“I do.”

Emma looked at him.

“Who?”

He did not answer.

Instead, he looked at the clock.

“We need to leave.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever stole that envelope knew exactly where it was.”

Emma stood.

“And now?”

May you like

Garrison looked toward the door.

“Now they know you have the second file.”
