Chapter 7 - why vanessa confessed)

Later, Daniel would replay that moment thousands of times.
Vanessa confessing.
Evelyn defending her.
The bat.
Lucy’s scream.
The shadow upstairs.
But what mattered most happened afterward.
Marcus locked down the mansion.
Guests were questioned before leaving.
No one admitted going upstairs.
No one claimed to have seen Lucy taken.
Security footage showed something impossible.
At eight-fourteen Lucy stood beside Mrs. Grayson.
At eight-fourteen and twelve seconds, the ballroom cameras glitched.
At eight-fourteen and nineteen seconds, the image returned.
Lucy was gone.
Seven seconds.
Someone had removed her from a crowded room in seven seconds without appearing on any camera.
Daniel sat beside Lucy in the library.
She was asleep beneath a blanket.
Vanessa sat opposite him with a swollen cheek where shattered glass from the previous shooting had cut her.
“You lied,” Daniel said.
“Yes.”
“You didn’t lock Lucy in that room.”
“No.”
“Why did you confess?”
Vanessa looked toward the sleeping child.
“Because I was told to.”
“By who?”
“The message arrived seconds before you came downstairs.”
She showed him her phone.
One deleted message had been recovered by Marcus.
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OR THE GIRL FALLS FROM THE BALCONY.
Daniel’s stomach twisted.
“Why didn’t you show me?”
“Because she was watching.”
“Who is she?”
Vanessa covered her face.
Evelyn stood near the window.
She had stopped pretending not to know.
Daniel turned toward her.
“One of you tells me now.”
Evelyn whispered, “Her name is Helena Vale.”
Marcus looked up sharply.
Daniel repeated it.
“Helena Vale.”
The name meant nothing to him.
Marcus knew it.
“You’ve heard of her.”
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Not for a long time.”
“Who is she?”
“A private financial adviser. Political donor. She operated through holding companies.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“That’s the public version.”
Evelyn sat down.
“Helena owned Halcyon.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You stole money with her.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“At first I believed it was legal.”
“Two point eight million dollars accidentally reached you?”
“I was paid for introducing donors.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
Evelyn’s shoulders fell.
“I stopped believing myself years ago.”
Vanessa looked at her mother.
“You told me Helena was helping us.”
“She was.”
“She used us.”
“Yes.”
Daniel stood.
“What did she want with Caroline?”
Evelyn stared at the floor.
“Your wife discovered the transfers.”
“We know that.”
“She traced them further than anyone expected.”
“To what?”
Evelyn lifted her eyes.
“Missing children.”
The room became silent.
Daniel thought he had misunderstood.
“What?”
Marcus moved closer.
“Explain.”
Evelyn swallowed.
“Halcyon donated money to international adoption programs. Shelters. Foster networks. Private medical foundations.”
Daniel felt dread forming.
“Were they trafficking children?”
“I don’t know.”
“Don’t lie.”
“I don’t know everything.”
Vanessa whispered, “Caroline found fake identities.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Children were being moved between organizations under different names,” Vanessa continued. “Some were real adoptions. Some…”
She stopped.
“Some what?”
“Some disappeared.”
Daniel stared at Lucy.
Caroline had discovered something much larger than stolen charity funds.
“Why did you threaten her?”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Helena told me Caroline was fabricating evidence to destroy my mother. I believed her.”
“You followed Caroline.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she had a daughter.”
“Yes.”
“And you still threatened her.”
Vanessa nodded through tears.
Daniel wanted to hate her.
Part of him did.
But someone had just tried to shoot her.
Someone had used Lucy to force her confession.
Whatever Vanessa had done, she was not the highest level of this nightmare.
“What happened at the marina?” Marcus asked.
Evelyn’s face collapsed.
“I drove Caroline there.”
Daniel stepped toward her.
“You what?”
“She called me.”
“Why?”
“She said she had proof Helena was using the foundation.”
“Why would she trust you?”
“She didn’t. She wanted me to see it before she went to police.”
“Lucy was with her?”
Evelyn nodded.
“Caroline refused to leave her at home because she believed the house was watched.”
Daniel’s fists clenched.
“And Vanessa?”
“She followed us.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. I followed Caroline from the mansion, but I lost her before the marina.”
Lucy’s drawing showed Vanessa there.
Someone was still lying.
Evelyn continued.
“Helena arrived.”
“In red?”
“Yes.”
Daniel felt his skin prickle.
“What did she do?”
“She spoke with Caroline.”
“About what?”
“I couldn’t hear.”
“Then?”
“There was an argument.”
“And?”
Evelyn began crying.
“I took Lucy to my car.”
“You took my child away while her mother was in danger?”
“I thought I was protecting her.”
“What happened to Caroline?”
“I don’t know.”
“You were there.”
“I drove Lucy away.”
“Where?”
“To Vanessa’s apartment.”
Vanessa stared.
“What?”
Evelyn looked at her daughter.
“You were home by then.”
Vanessa slowly stood.
“You brought Lucy to me?”
“You were asleep. I put her on your sofa.”
Vanessa’s face emptied.
Daniel remembered that Lucy had occasionally called Vanessa’s old apartment “the quiet house.”
A memory he never understood.
“What happened when you returned to the marina?” Marcus asked.
Evelyn whispered, “Caroline was gone.”
“And Helena?”
“Gone.”
“Any blood?”
“No.”
“Boat?”
“Gone.”
“Did you call police?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Why?”
“Helena called me.”
“What did she say?”
Evelyn looked directly at Daniel.
“She said Caroline had made her choice.”
The library door opened.
A security guard entered carrying a package.
“This was left at the gate.”
No vehicle had been seen.
No courier.
Inside the package was Caroline’s wedding ring.
And beneath it, a handwritten message.

Daniel recognized his wife’s handwriting immediately.
I AM ALIVE.
