Chapter 25 - the woman in red

Vale House stood on a rocky section of coast two hours from Hartford.

Helena had not lived there publicly for thirty years.

On paper, the estate belonged to a trust.

On the red ledger, it was H-0.

The first Halcyon archive.

Amelia refused to remain behind.

“She built the network there.”

Marcus disagreed.

“She may be waiting for you.”

“She is always waiting for me.”

Daniel understood the difference.

They approached with a federal tactical team before dawn.

The house looked abandoned.

It was not.

Electricity ran underground.

Cameras moved behind old stone walls.

The basement contained rooms that did not exist on architectural plans.

Amelia led them through a service corridor she remembered from childhood.

At the end stood a red door.

Daniel looked at her.

“Did she always like red?”

Amelia gave him a tired smile.

“Only after people started being afraid of it.”

Inside the archive were thousands of files.

Original files.

Not copies.

Children’s birth names.

Parents.

Court orders.

Payments.

Photographs.

Every identity Halcyon had changed.

Every person Helena believed belonged to her system.

Caroline found one box marked WHITMORE.

She opened it.

Lucy’s prenatal report lay inside.

Daniel’s name.

Caroline’s name.

Expected date of birth.

A photograph from an ultrasound.

Across the top:

MARGARET DESCENDANT.

LEVERAGE STATUS ACTIVE.

Caroline sat down.

“She was watching her before she had a face.”

Daniel took the paper.

Below it was another file.

The hospital night.

Three infants.

Caroline’s daughter.

Amelia’s twins.

Daniel turned pages until he found the transfer log.

Lucy Whitmore.

Biological parents confirmed.

Daniel Whitmore.

Caroline Whitmore.

NO TRANSFER COMPLETED.

Daniel stared.

Caroline read it over his shoulder.

Her knees weakened.

He caught her.

For six years Caroline had believed something false.

Now the truth existed in Helena’s own handwriting.

Lucy had always been theirs.

Across the room Amelia opened another file.

Noah Cross.

Emily Cross.

Twin birth confirmation.

Biological mother Amelia Cross.

Father Michael Cross.

Amelia touched the name.

Daniel had never heard it.

“My husband.”

“What happened to him?”

“Helena told me he died in a robbery.”

Daniel knew that look.

“You don’t believe her.”

“No.”

Marcus searched the archive index.

Michael Cross had a file.

STATUS TERMINATED.

No details.

Amelia closed the folder.

She did not need another mystery.

Not today.

Then a speaker clicked above them.

Helena’s voice.

“Amelia.”

Everyone froze.

Amelia looked at the ceiling.

Her mother continued.

“You always did open doors you were told to leave closed.”

Amelia answered.

“And you always mistook possession for love.”

A door locked behind them.

Smoke began entering the corridor.

Fire.

Marcus shouted for agents to move the evidence.

Sprinklers failed.

Helena was destroying H-0.

Amelia found an old secondary stairwell.

They evacuated boxes by hand.

Caroline refused to leave Lucy’s file.

Daniel stayed with her.

At the top of the stairs, he looked down.

Through smoke, he saw a woman standing in the basement corridor.

Silver hair.

Red coat.

Helena had changed again.

The woman in red looked up at him.

For one second neither moved.

Then she turned.

Daniel followed.

Marcus shouted his name.

Daniel ignored him.

He reached the lower hall as Helena disappeared through a side door.

Outside, agents covered the cliffs.

No vehicle left.

No boat.

No helicopter.

Helena vanished.

But this time she had lost something.

Her archive.

Her judges.

Her doctors.

Her routes.

Her secrecy.

And Amelia had heard her mother say one thing before escaping.

Home.

Daniel finally understood.

Helena did not mean Vale House.

She meant his.
