Chapter 14 - margaret whitmore is alive)

Daniel thought Caroline was confused.

Then she showed him a photograph.

It had been taken eight months earlier.

Margaret Whitmore sat at a café table.

Older.

Gray-haired.

But unmistakably Daniel’s mother.

He had attended her funeral twenty-eight years ago.

He had touched her coffin.

He had spent half his life believing she was dead.

“Where?”

“Montreal.”

“How?”

“Halcyon.”

Caroline explained.

Margaret survived the staged car accident.

Helena gave her a choice.

Disappear or Daniel would become a target.

Margaret chose disappearance.

For years she lived under false identities.

Then she began quietly dismantling parts of Halcyon from inside.

“She’s the one who helped me escape the marina,” Caroline said.

Daniel stared.

“What happened that night?”

Caroline looked at Lucy.

The children were sleeping in the adjoining room.

Vanessa and Marcus stood nearby.

Evelyn remained missing.

Caroline finally told the truth.

At the marina, Helena confronted her.

Helena demanded Caroline surrender the evidence.

Caroline refused.

Evelyn panicked and took Lucy away.

Then Vanessa arrived.

Vanessa stared.

“I was there?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I lost you.”

“You found us twenty minutes later.”

“I don’t remember.”

Caroline studied her.

“Helena drugged you.”

Vanessa sat down.

Daniel remembered Lucy’s drawing.

Yellow hair.

It had been accurate.

“What happened to Caroline?” Daniel asked.

“Helena tried to force me onto the boat.”

“Why?”

“To make my disappearance look accidental.”

“How did you escape?”

“Your mother.”

Margaret had been watching Helena.

She sabotaged the boat’s fuel system.

During the argument, Caroline jumped into the water.

Margaret pulled her out downstream.

Helena believed she drowned for almost twelve hours.

By the time Helena discovered the truth, Caroline was hidden under a new identity.

“Why didn’t you come home then?”

“Because Helena had Lucy.”

Daniel frowned.

“Lucy was with Vanessa.”

“Exactly.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Caroline continued.

“Helena told me that if I contacted you, she would activate Halcyon records proving Lucy was illegally placed with us.”

Daniel understood.

“She would take her.”

“Yes.”

Caroline spent three years collecting enough evidence to destroy the network permanently.

But whenever she got close, people disappeared.

Witnesses died.

Records vanished.

“She needed the red ledger,” Marcus said.

Caroline nodded.

“The ledger contains original identities. Payments. Judges. Police officers. Doctors. Everyone.”

“Where is Margaret now?”

Caroline’s expression tightened.

“I don’t know.”

“You said you went to her.”

“I found the place she was supposed to meet me.”

“And?”

“Blood.”

Daniel stared.

“No body?”

“No.”

“Then Helena has her.”

“Maybe.”

Daniel thought of Evelyn.

Two older women missing.

Both original founders.

Helena was cleaning the past.

“What about Amelia?” he asked.

Caroline looked at the sleeping twins.

“She’s alive.”

Daniel inhaled.

“Where?”

“I don’t know anymore.”

“You met her?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“Six months after I disappeared.”

“Why didn’t she take her children?”

Caroline’s eyes filled.

“She tried.”

Daniel waited.

“Helena had already moved Noah. Lucy was legally registered as ours. Amelia believed taking Lucy would expose both children.”

“Does Amelia know Lucy is safe?”

“She knew.”

“Before the dinner?”

“Yes.”

Daniel remembered Lucy describing the woman who entered through the balcony.

“She looks like Mommy.”

Not Caroline.

Amelia.

“Was Amelia at my house?”

Caroline looked startled.

“When?”

“The day Lucy received the photograph of the babies.”

Caroline shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel described the visitor.

Caroline’s face changed.

“She may have been.”

“Then why not stay?”

“Because Amelia trusts nobody.”

“She can trust me.”

Caroline gave him a sad look.

“Daniel, you are part of the Whitmore family.”

The implication hurt.

“My mother helped create Halcyon.”

“Yes.”

“And Amelia blames her?”

“She blames all three founders.”

Daniel sat quietly.

His life had become a web built before he was old enough to understand it.

At dawn, Marcus received an encrypted email.

One attachment.

Photograph.

Evelyn sat beside Margaret.

Both alive.

Both bound.

Behind them stood Helena Vale.

Silver-haired.

Elegant.

Calm.

She wore a red gemstone ring.

A message accompanied the image.

BRING LUCY AND NOAH TO THE OLD WHITMORE SANATORIUM.

NO POLICE.

MIDNIGHT.

Daniel read it twice.

Caroline whispered, “She finally has all three bloodlines.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

Caroline did not answer.

Because another message appeared.
