Chapter 23 - the children on route seventeen

They found the first bus abandoned near an old service station.

Eight children were inside.

No driver.

No injuries.

No explanation.

Each child carried documents under a different name.

The second bus continued north.

State police closed Route Seventeen.

Federal agents checked every exit.

Nothing.

Marcus studied traffic footage.

“The bus never passed camera twelve.”

Daniel looked at the map.

“Then it left the road.”

A county maintenance officer remembered an old forestry route.

Agents found tire tracks.

Forty minutes later, the missing bus was located beside an abandoned summer camp.

Nine children were inside one of the cabins.

The driver had fled.

The children were frightened but safe.

Daniel arrived with Amelia after the site was secured.

A seven-year-old girl sat near the door holding a red thread bracelet.

Three intersecting circles hung from it.

Primary.

Daniel crouched.

“What’s your name?”

The girl looked toward a social worker.

Then whispered, “Which one?”

The answer nearly broke him.

Marcus recovered three passports for her.

Three birth certificates.

Two sets of parents.

None real.

Her latest file listed her as Asset 0062.

Helena was recycling identities.

Not people.

Numbers.

The girl had become Emily because Emily had escaped.

Sarah began coordinating emergency identity protection for every rescued child.

Amelia walked through the cabin slowly.

She had lived inside Halcyon’s shadow most of her life.

Now she was looking at what her mother had turned it into.

“This was supposed to help women disappear from men who would kill them,” she whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“That may be how it started.”

“She made children disappear instead.”

“Yes.”

Amelia cried silently.

Daniel did not tell her it was not her fault.

It was not his place to decide what part of inherited guilt belonged to her.

He simply stood beside her.

That evening, all seventeen children were accounted for.

Harbor House records were partially recovered.

The public learned the name Halcyon.

Federal raids began in five states.

Then Vanessa received a call.

She was alone when she answered.

Her mother noticed the color leave her face.

“Who is it?”

Vanessa did not reply.

She walked outside.

Helena’s voice came through the phone.

“You embarrassed me.”

Vanessa gripped the railing.

“You destroyed yourself.”

Helena laughed.

“No. Your mother helped build something beautiful. Margaret ruined it. Amelia betrayed it. And you were too weak to understand any of it.”

“What do you want?”

“You.”

Vanessa looked through the window.

Daniel stood inside with Caroline.

Evelyn sat near Margaret.

Three families that Helena had spent decades poisoning were finally in one room without her.

“Why?”

“Because there are things you still don’t know about your engagement.”

Vanessa’s throat tightened.

“What things?”

“You believed meeting Daniel was chance.”

Silence.

“It wasn’t.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Helena continued.

“Come alone tomorrow morning and I’ll tell you why Caroline had to disappear before you could marry him.”

The call ended.

Vanessa stared at the phone.

Then she did something Helena had never expected from her.

May you like

She walked back inside.

And told everyone.
