Chapter 24 - vanessa’s choice

Vanessa did not go alone.

She only appeared to.

Marcus fitted her with a transmitter that did not use the same frequencies as the sanatorium equipment.

Federal agents positioned outside the meeting location.

Daniel objected anyway.

“She wants Vanessa isolated.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“She has spent years using my fear of her.”

“You don’t owe us this.”

“No.”

She glanced at Lucy playing in the next room.

“I owe myself this.”

The meeting location was an abandoned glass conservatory once owned by one of Helena’s foundations.

Vanessa entered at nine.

Helena waited among dead plants and broken windows.

No red coat.

Gray this time.

Vanessa almost smiled.

“What?”

“I expected red.”

Helena’s expression cooled.

“You always confused performance with power.”

“And you confused fear with loyalty.”

Helena studied her.

“You’ve changed.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

Vanessa surprised herself with the answer.

“This has nothing to do with Daniel anymore.”

Helena walked closer.

“You want to know why you met him?”

Vanessa said nothing.

“After Caroline disappeared, Daniel was unstable. Lonely. His mother’s bloodline was exposed through Lucy. Margaret was still missing.”

Vanessa felt sick.

“You put me near him.”

“I introduced your foundation to his law firm.”

“You arranged the gala.”

“Yes.”

“The board dinner?”

“Yes.”

“My mother?”

“Evelyn knew I wanted the families close. She did not know why.”

Vanessa remembered every coincidence.

Every invitation.

Every moment she had once called fate.

“What did you want?”

“Access.”

“To Lucy.”

“Eventually.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“And you expected me to marry him.”

“Yes.”

“Then what?”

“Families trust family.”

Vanessa understood.

Helena wanted a person inside Daniel’s home.

A person who could influence custody.

Security.

Schools.

Medical decisions.

Vanessa had been prepared as a doorway.

“You used me.”

Helena shrugged.

“I gave you the life you wanted.”

“No.”

Vanessa’s voice steadied.

“You made sure I never knew which parts were mine.”

Outside, Marcus listened.

So did Daniel.

Helena continued talking.

She admitted pressuring Vanessa to follow Caroline.

Admitted staging the dinner confession.

Admitted using Merrick.

Admitted ordering Dr. Mills to falsify the DNA result.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

They had enough for conspiracy.

Maybe more.

Then Vanessa asked the question that mattered.

“Where are the missing pages?”

Helena smiled.

“You’ve finally learned.”

“Where?”

“Safe.”

“Harbor House?”

“No.”

“The sanatorium?”

“No.”

“Then where?”

Helena stepped close.

“The same place everything began.”

Vanessa frowned.

Helena whispered, “Home.”

Before Vanessa could ask what she meant, one glass wall exploded inward.

Not from a bomb.

A vehicle crashed through the side entrance.

Smoke filled the conservatory.

Agents moved.

Vanessa dropped behind a stone planter.

By the time the smoke cleared, Helena had escaped through an underground irrigation tunnel.

But she left something behind.

A leather folder.

Inside were eleven of the twelve missing ledger pages.

One remained gone.

Marcus studied the recovered sheets.

Current officials.

Bank accounts.

Routes.

Properties.

Then he reached the final recovered page.

A handwritten notation appeared at the bottom.

H-0.

ORIGINAL RECORDS.

VALE HOUSE.

Amelia stared at it.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

May you like

Amelia’s voice became almost inaudible.

“She means the house where I grew up.”
