Chapter 11 - the hearing)

Daniel’s emergency hearing took place forty-eight hours later.
The courtroom was closed to the public because Lucy was a minor.
Vanessa sat behind Daniel.
Evelyn sat alone.
Marcus remained outside waiting to testify if called.
The state’s attorney presented photographs from the dinner.
Daniel holding the bat.
Vanessa retreating.
Lucy visible in the background.
It looked terrible.
Then the video played.
The prosecution had obtained a fourteen-second clip.
It began as Daniel picked up the bat.
It ended before he lowered it.
Daniel’s lawyer, Sarah Keene, objected.
“Where is the preceding footage?”
The prosecutor said it had not been provided.
Sarah presented Vanessa’s text message threatening Lucy.
The prosecutor questioned its authenticity.
Marcus provided a forensic report.
The judge remained cautious.
Then Vanessa was called.
Daniel feared what she might say.
She took the oath.
The state attorney asked, “Did Mr. Whitmore threaten you with a baseball bat?”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Yes.”
Sarah closed her eyes briefly.
The prosecutor continued.
“Were you afraid?”
“Yes.”
“Do you believe he could have harmed you?”
Vanessa paused.
Then said, “No.”
The prosecutor frowned.
“You just said you were afraid.”
“I was.”
“Explain.”
“I believed someone else would hurt his daughter if I did not make Daniel appear violent.”
The courtroom changed.
Vanessa described the message.
The locked room.
Her forced confession.
The sniper attack.
Helena Vale.
The judge ordered a recess.
During the break, Daniel stood beside Vanessa in the corridor.
“Why did you help me?”
She gave a tired smile.
“Because I owe Lucy more than an apology.”
Daniel did not forgive her.
But he believed that sentence.
The judge ultimately declined to remove Lucy.
However, Daniel was ordered to avoid weapons and cooperate with investigators.
The decision felt like a victory.
It lasted nineteen minutes.
As they left the courthouse, federal agents arrested Marcus.
Daniel watched in disbelief.
Charges involved evidence tampering in Caroline’s original disappearance investigation.
Someone had produced documents claiming Marcus removed critical evidence.
The license-plate photograph.
The very evidence he admitted keeping.
“It’s Helena,” Vanessa whispered.
Marcus was taken away.
Daniel’s best investigator was gone.
Then Evelyn disappeared.
Her phone was found in a courthouse bathroom.
No witnesses saw her leave.
Vanessa panicked.
“She wouldn’t run.”
Daniel was less certain.
That evening, a message arrived.
A live video.
Evelyn sat tied to a chair in a dark room.
A woman stood behind her.
Only her red sleeve was visible.
Helena’s voice spoke off camera.
“Vanessa, you have always been disappointing.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“Daniel Whitmore has something that belongs to me.”
The camera moved closer to Evelyn.
“Return it.”
The video ended.
Daniel knew instantly.
“Lucy.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
“What else could she mean?”
“The memory card.”
Daniel considered it.
“Maybe.”
Another message arrived.
Not the card.
THE GIRL.
Daniel stared at the words.
Vanessa began crying.
“She wants Lucy.”
“She isn’t getting her.”
“She has my mother.”
“I’m sorry.”
Vanessa turned on him.
“That’s all?”
“What do you want me to do? Trade my daughter?”
“No.”
Vanessa sank into a chair.
“No.”
Daniel looked at the photograph of the two infants again.
If Lucy was Helena’s granddaughter, why call her a possession?
What made her so valuable?
Then he saw something in the image he had missed.
The second baby had a wrist band.
Not a hospital band.
A small red thread with a metal charm.
Daniel zoomed in.
A symbol.
Three intersecting circles.
He searched Caroline’s files.
The same symbol appeared on several Halcyon documents.
Beside names of certain children.
Each was labeled PRIMARY.
Lucy’s status was ACTIVE ASSET.
But another child was labeled PRIMARY ASSET.
Identification number 0062.
No name.
Daniel searched photographs.
File corrupted.
Then the front-door alarm sounded.
Security drew weapons.
A small figure stood outside.
A boy.
Around six years old.
Barefoot.
Cold.
Terrified.
Daniel opened the door cautiously.
The boy looked at him.
Then at Lucy standing behind him.
They had the same eyes.
The boy held out a folded piece of paper.
“Your wife said to give you this.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“Caroline?”
The boy nodded.
Daniel opened the note.
