Chapter 22 - the judge in the ledger

The courtroom was full before noon.

Not the public gallery.

Federal agents.

State attorneys.

Child welfare representatives.

Three prosecutors.

Four defense lawyers.

And one judge who did not yet know his name appeared on twenty-three pages of the red ledger.

Hollis Merrick entered through the side door.

He saw Margaret Whitmore sitting behind Daniel.

His face changed.

Only for a second.

Sarah saw it.

So did Daniel.

The hearing began with Merrick attempting to remove Noah and Emily immediately.

Sarah stood.

“Before the court rules, we move for recusal.”

Merrick frowned.

“On what basis?”

Sarah placed a sealed federal exhibit on the table.

“Your Honor’s financial relationship with Halcyon.”

The room became silent.

Merrick stared at the envelope.

“I have no relationship with any organization by that name.”

Margaret spoke from the gallery.

“Yes, you do.”

Everyone turned.

Merrick went pale.

Margaret Whitmore stood.

For twenty-eight years the world had believed she was dead.

Merrick had believed it too.

“You accepted your first payment from Helena in 2006,” Margaret said. “You called it consulting.”

Merrick struck the bench.

“Remove that woman.”

Nobody moved.

Two federal agents stepped closer to him instead.

Sarah presented certified copies of the red ledger entries.

Then banking records obtained overnight.

Then Dr. Mills’s statement.

Then the original Halcyon charter.

Merrick tried to end the hearing.

A federal judge joined remotely and issued an immediate stay on every custody order Merrick had signed involving the Whitmore matter.

Then Marcus played a recording.

Merrick’s own voice.

Recorded during a call with Helena six hours earlier.

“Once the children are in state custody, I can move them.”

Helena answered.

“Both?”

“Yes.”

The recording ended.

Merrick did not speak again.

Federal agents arrested him in his own courtroom.

Daniel watched the handcuffs close around the judge’s wrists.

He expected satisfaction.

What he felt was exhaustion.

Outside, reporters crowded the courthouse steps.

For the first time, the questions were not about Daniel holding a bat.

They were about Halcyon.

Missing children.

Corrupt judges.

Staged deaths.

The story was changing.

Helena knew it.

At 1:42 p.m., federal agents reached Harbor House.

At 1:47, Marcus received the call.

The building was nearly empty.

Records were burning in metal containers behind the property.

Employees had fled.

And two buses had departed twenty minutes before the raid.

“Children?” Daniel asked.

Marcus nodded.

“How many?”

“Seventeen confirmed.”

Amelia closed her eyes.

Marcus continued.

“One bus has already been located.”

“And the other?”

“Missing.”

A former Harbor House caregiver agreed to speak.

She had one useful detail.

“The second driver was told to take Route Seventeen north.”

Marcus reached for his radio.

The woman stopped him.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“She had a passenger list.”

Marcus waited.

The caregiver looked directly at Daniel.

“One child was listed under Asset Number 0062.”

Emily’s number.

Daniel looked across the courthouse lobby.

Emily was standing beside Grace.

Safe.

Which meant Helena had started using the identity again.

For another child.
