Chapter 30 - THE WOMAN ON CAMERA

Three months later, Elias was recovering.
Arthur awaited trial inside a facility that did not rely on biometric locks.
Cradle remained sealed under international supervision.
Mara’s legal identity had been restored, though she no longer trusted the word restored.
Some nights, she dreamed in memories belonging to Evelyn Shaw.
Other nights, she wondered whether those memories had been planted too.
Jonah accompanied her to the address from the phone call.
The supposedly destroyed house stood alone beside a frozen lake.
Inside, the rooms were empty except for a projector and a child’s wooden chair.
The projector activated when Mara entered.
Footage appeared on the wall.
A woman with Mara’s face walked into the Zurich vault.
She opened a locked case using Evelyn Shaw’s original fingerprints.
Inside were dozens of identity drives Arthur had never stored in Cradle.
The woman turned toward the security camera.
“You believe Orpheus was software,” she said.
“It wasn’t.”
The image changed.
Scientists stood around a hospital bed twenty-six years earlier.
A twelve-year-old girl lay unconscious.
Beside her was another child with the same face.
Mara stepped closer to the wall.
The second child opened her eyes.
The footage ended.
Jonah found an envelope beneath the projector.
Two names were written across it.
EVELYN SHAW.
MARA QUINN.
Inside was a recent photograph of Theo and May leaving school.
A third child stood across the street watching them.
She looked exactly like May.
On the back of the photograph were six words.
THE FIRST PLANE WAS ONLY A TEST.
Outside, an aircraft passed silently over the lake.
Mara’s phone rang.
The caller used her own number.
She answered.
May you like
Her own voice whispered:
“Stop the next plane.”
