Hundreds of screens activated.
Each displayed a different version of Mara.
Mara crossing a border in Prague.
Mara entering a bank in Zurich.
Mara meeting an intelligence officer in Istanbul.
None of the events had happened.
Gideon had prepared identities using her face for decades.
Cass examined the devices.
“These aren’t recordings. They’re instructions.”
Orpheus planned to create thousands of crimes connected to Mara. By sunrise, every government would be searching for her.
Gideon’s voice came through the baggage hall.
“You can remain Mara Quinn and accept the consequences, or become Evelyn Shaw again.”
“What happens to Mara?”
“She disappears.”
“What happens to Evelyn?”
“She inherits Orpheus.”
Mara crushed one of the screens under her shoe.
“I don’t want either identity.”
Gideon laughed softly.
“Everyone needs a name.”
“Only because men like you built systems that demand one.”
Mara inserted the childhood cassette into a maintenance reader.
The recording contained more than audio. Elias had hidden a root certificate inside its magnetic pattern.
The certificate recognized Evelyn Shaw as Orpheus’s first registered identity.
The first ghost could command every ghost created after her.
A new option appeared on the baggage screens.
RESTORE ORIGINAL RECORDS.
Lena warned her that restoring everything could expose protected people.
Cass warned that leaving the system active would let Gideon control them forever.
Mara selected neither option.
She created a third command.
SEPARATE IDENTITY FROM AUTHORITY.
The system requested approval from three root users.
Evelyn Shaw.
Elias Quinn.
And GIDEON QUINN.
