Chapter 21 - THE LIE LENA TOLD
The false Lena removed a transparent mask.
Beneath it was Dr. Sabine Holt, Quinn Aeronautics’ director of biometric research.
Mara had trusted Sabine for twelve years.
Sabine had designed the airport’s facial-recognition safeguards.
She had also designed the technology that defeated them.
Theo and May moved toward her, confused by Lena’s voice.
Elias shouted through the glass.
“That is not your mother!”
Sabine activated a device.
The children stopped moving.
Their wristbands lit up.
Mara had assumed the bands were medical trackers. They were sound transmitters, playing Lena’s voice directly through vibrations against the children’s bones.
Sabine could guide them without anyone else hearing the commands.
Jonah disabled one wristband.
Mara removed the other.
Theo began crying quietly.
“She sounded like Mommy.”
“I know,” Mara said. “But you were brave enough to stop.”
Sabine retreated toward the vault door.
Jonah followed, but Elias warned him to stay back.
Sabine held the transmitter linked to Elias’s implant.
“If I release this button, his heart stops.”
She demanded the ring and the children’s complete melody.
Mara offered the ring.
As Sabine reached for it, a woman attacked her from the side.
The struggle lasted only seconds.
The transmitter slid across the floor without being released.
The newcomer caught it.
Her hair was shorter, and her face was pale from months underground.
But Theo and May recognized her immediately.
“Mommy!”
The real Lena stood between Sabine and the children.
Sabine smiled from the floor.
“You still don’t understand.”
She looked at Mara.
“I never worked for Ward.”
“Then who?”
