Chapter 23 - THE CHILDREN IN THE BAGGAGE BELT
Jonah had not kidnapped the children.
Security footage showed Theo and May entering an automated baggage tunnel alone.
They had overheard Gideon’s demand and decided to hide.
Mara, Lena and Cass followed their tracker through a maze of conveyor belts beneath the terminal.
Suitcases moved around them like silent passengers.
The children’s signal stopped near International Sorting Line Four.
They were not there.
Instead, Mara found May’s wristband attached to a suitcase traveling toward Gate Zero.
“They left a false trail,” Lena said.
Theo had learned deception from watching the adults around him.
May had learned courage from surviving them.
A metal panel rattled overhead.
The children climbed down from a maintenance shelf.
Theo carried a sealed package.
“We found this where the bags without names go,” he said.
The package bore Mara’s fingerprints.
It had been stored in the airport for twenty-six years.
The label read:
MARA QUINN — ORIGINAL.
Inside was a child’s passport.
The photograph showed Mara at twelve years old.
The name beneath it was Evelyn Shaw.
A second document identified Gideon Quinn as the man responsible for the deaths aboard the ferry.
Mara read it twice.
Her father had not rescued her from the disaster.
He had caused it.
She had witnessed him placing an explosive device aboard the ferry. Afterward, he erased Evelyn Shaw and created Mara Quinn to control the only survivor.
A small cassette rested beneath the documents.
Mara played it.
Her twelve-year-old voice filled the tunnel.
“My name is Evelyn. Mr. Quinn told me to call him Dad.”
Then Gideon’s voice interrupted the recording.
“Erase this one first.”
The baggage system stopped.
