Chapter 29 - THE PASSENGER WITHOUT A COUNTRY

Federal officers arrested Arthur, Ward and Sabine before sunrise.

Ward immediately offered evidence in exchange for protection.

Sabine claimed she had followed Arthur only because he controlled her identity.

Cass disappeared before investigators reached Gate Zero.

No camera recorded her departure.

Elias was transported to a secure hospital under his real name.

Lena and the children remained beside him.

For the first time in eighteen months, the four of them occupied the same room without someone listening through a hidden device.

Mara watched from the hallway.

Elias called her inside.

“You’re their aunt,” he said. “You don’t need permission.”

Theo handed her a drawing.

It showed six people holding hands.

No faces were covered.

Mara smiled, but her attention returned to the unknown data packet.

Jonah traced it to a private terminal in Switzerland.

Airport footage showed a female passenger leaving a small aircraft.

She carried no passport.

The border system admitted her anyway.

Her face matched Mara’s exactly.

Gait analysis matched Mara.

Her voice matched Mara.

Even her fingerprints matched Mara.

The woman entered a waiting car and traveled toward a private vault in Zurich.

Mara contacted Swiss authorities.

They found the car abandoned.

Inside was a black phone.

It rang when Mara called its number.

A woman answered.

“You have my face,” Mara said.

“No,” the woman replied. “You have mine.”

The voice belonged to Evelyn Shaw.

Not the twelve-year-old voice on the cassette.

An adult version.

Before ending the call, she whispered an address.

Mara recognized it.

It was the house where she had lived before the ferry accident.

A house everyone said had burned down.
