Chapter 28 - TWELVE SECONDS OF SILENCE
May was seven years old.
Somewhere in the airport, Orpheus had scanned her while she hummed Elias’s melody.
Arthur had made her the root user because no government would suspect a child.
Lena brought May and Theo into the chamber despite Mara’s warning.
“There is no time left,” she said.
Emergency deletion: thirty-two seconds.
May stood on the scanner platform.
The system asked her to confirm the destruction of Cradle.
She looked at Elias.
“Will it hurt people?”
“Yes,” he said honestly.
“Will keeping it hurt people?”
“Yes.”
May frowned.
“Those are bad choices.”
Mara knelt beside her.
“Then we make a new one.”
Theo and May began humming the bedtime melody.
Elias entered the four missing notes from his ring.
Mara played Evelyn’s cassette.
Three identity layers synchronized.
The first ghost.
The unwilling creator.
The innocent root user.
Twelve seconds remained.
Mara ordered Orpheus to preserve the records while removing every remote access key.
The system would become an archive, not a weapon.
Arthur tried to stop them.
Gideon blocked him.
Jonah protected the control console while Cass closed every exit.
Three seconds.
Two.
One.
All screens went dark.
For twelve silent seconds, no one knew whether the command had worked.
Then Elias’s monitor stabilized.
Sabine removed the final component of his implant.
“It’s disabled,” she said.
Lights returned across the chamber.
Orpheus displayed one message.
REMOTE ACCESS DESTROYED.
Mara exhaled.
A second message appeared.
ONE DATA PACKET TRANSMITTED.
Destination unknown.
Arthur smiled.
“You stopped the system.”
