Chapter 9 - The Recorder Has Two Memories

Elena, Miriam, and Sophia reached the lake house shortly before midnight.
Rain moved across the dark water in long silver lines.
The house stood among tall trees, isolated from the road and invisible from the neighboring properties.
Elena remembered visiting once before the crash.
Camila had cooked breakfast while Adrian complained about fishing hooks. Dante had arrived late, carrying an expensive bottle of wine and three board games no one understood.
For one weekend, they had seemed like an ordinary family.
Now every window was dark.
Miriam parked behind an old maintenance shed.
“The gate was open,” she said.
“Someone is already here,” Elena replied.
Sophia looked toward the house.
“Can I stay in the car?”
Elena wanted to say yes.
Then she remembered the vehicles surrounding the motel.
“No. You stay beside me.”
They approached through the trees.
Near the kitchen entrance, Elena smelled smoke.
Miriam saw it too.
They ran.
Inside, a thin layer of smoke drifted through the hallway.
Flames were beginning to spread across the floor of a small office near the rear staircase.
A man in a gray coat stood near the open door holding a metal case.
Charles Rook stared at them.
“You should not be here.”
Miriam stepped forward.
“Put the case down.”
Rook looked at Sophia.
His expression tightened.
“This was supposed to happen quietly.”
Elena pulled Sophia behind her.
“What is in the case?”
“Documents that no longer matter.”
“They matter enough to burn a house.”
Rook glanced toward the growing flames.
“You have no idea what Adrian created.”
“Then tell us.”
“He created a company that could be controlled by a frightened child.”
“Sophia does not control Vale Holdings.”
“Her trust does.”
Miriam moved toward a wall panel and activated the fire-suppression system.
Water sprayed from the ceiling.
The flames weakened.
Rook cursed and reached for the panel, but Elena blocked him.
“No one needs to be hurt,” she said.
“I agree.”
He set down the metal case.
For half a second, Elena believed he was surrendering.
Then he pushed the case across the wet floor toward the open fireplace.
Sophia stepped forward and kicked it sideways before it reached the flames.
The case struck a chair.
Its lock broke.
Papers scattered across the floor.
Miriam rushed to collect them.
Rook moved toward Sophia.
Elena stepped between them.
Headlights appeared through the windows.
Several vehicles entered the driveway.
Rook stopped.
“Marco,” he whispered.
Elena could not tell whether he sounded relieved or afraid.
The front door opened.
Dante entered with two security officers and the head of digital security.
He saw Sophia first.
Relief crossed his face so openly that Elena almost forgot the accusations against her.
“Sophia.”
She did not run to him.
Dante looked at Elena.
“Are you both all right?”
“We are now.”
Rook moved toward the side door.
One officer blocked him.
Dante looked at the wet papers.
“What did he try to destroy?”
Miriam held up a document bearing Adrian’s signature.
“The sealed guardianship clause.”
Dante’s eyes moved to Elena.
“Who is named?”
Miriam read the provision.
“In the event that Sophia is isolated, relocated without informed consent, or placed under financial pressure by the trustee, the trustee’s spouse, or any agent acting under their authority, emergency guardianship transfers to Elena Marlowe.”
Dante absorbed the words in silence.
Elena expected anger.
Instead, he looked ashamed.
“Adrian didn’t trust me.”
“He trusted you,” Miriam said. “He did not trust the people around you.”
Sophia removed the recorder from her backpack.
“Uncle Dante, you need to hear it.”
Dante looked at the device.
Before he could take it, the house lights went out.
A loud click came from the front door.
It had locked automatically.
The security director checked his phone.
“The house system has been accessed remotely.”
Rook laughed once.
“You still think Marco is coming here to save you?”
Dante stepped toward him.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“You worked with him.”
“I worked for the person who paid him.”
“Bianca?”
Rook smiled.
“Bianca thinks she is in control.”
The fireplace suddenly opened with a mechanical sound.
Behind it, a steel stairway descended beneath the house.
Emergency lights activated along the walls.
Miriam stared at the hidden entrance.
“Adrian’s records room.”
Rook’s confidence disappeared.
“No.”
Dante looked at him.
“What is down there?”
Rook moved backward.
“That room was sealed.”
Sophia held up the blue envelope.
“Mom left the code.”
Dante approached the stairway.
“Which code?”
“The date our family truly began.”
Sophia looked at Elena.
“It wasn’t my birthday.”
She turned to Dante.
“It was the day you saved Dad.”
Dante went still.
Years earlier, before Adrian married Camila, Dante had pulled him from a sinking car after an accident near the family estate.
The date was engraved on the back of Dante’s watch.
He entered the numbers into the control panel.
The steel door opened.
Cold air moved up the stairs.
At the bottom stood rows of cabinets and a central desk.
On the desk was an old audio system.
A light blinked beside one word.
MESSAGE.
Dante pressed the button.
May you like
Adrian’s voice filled the underground room.
“Dante, if you found this, Marco has already betrayed us.”
